Looks awesome - has me excited to tinker and make a frankenstein guitar.

Danny, You've done a spectacular job on the Jagmaster.

That is mine indeed, though I'm hardly the first to perform this surgery.

For those of us that go back to the Yahoo Group days, you'll likely remember Bruce Duncan's elaborate and detailed posts about modding a Jagmaster. ;)

And for awhile I owned one of Bruce's two Jagmaster creations.

I have a jagmaster (see my icon) and I want to rip out the p90s i put in, and put in twin single coils or even 3 like a strat.

Has anyone done this? or for that matter anyone ever built their own pickguard?

Here is a question since we are talking about modding guitars.. maybe a little off topic... but here goes.. does a standard strat sized single coil route in a pickguard accept jaguar style single coils? To me.. the Jaguar pickups seem a bit larger and more rectangular shaped compared to a strat pickup which seems smaller and more oval.

I'd estimate many 1000's of people have built their own pickguards. Make a template out of 3/4" wood and then rout your blank using a bearing bit. Or saw it out with a jigsaw and smooth the edges with a file.

I'm back playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta

Received my Jagmaster Vista today. Not sure if I recognize the pickups though. The input jack is a little scratchy, but otherwise it's a cool guitar. Also came with locking tuners. Price: $299.

I've owned 4 jagmasters and 3 of which I bought from members here and one on ebay that had Gibson burstbuckers in it. Loved 'em and miss 'em all too (especially Danny's) Here a Chinese made one currently on ebay and not a bad price.

Regarding replacement pickups on a Jagmaster; if the slots need to be routed for SJM-1's, would you be able to avoid this by using a SJM-3 (Quarter Pounder)? They look a bit narrower. I'd like to use a humbucker-sized single coil if possible, but keep it simple.

Holy thread bump!

To be honest, the only real let-downs of the guitar were the terrible pots, the cheap and badly cut nut, and the Fender Bullet 9's it shipped with. A half-hours' work with a soldering iron and some allan keys, either recutting or replacing the nut and three hours to get the bullet-ends of the stock strings out of the bridge.. and you have a really decent guitar.

Yes this is exactly why I stand by my 6+ year old statement. Big Grin

I'm glad you are enjoying your guitars though!

Reviving a very old thread here, but I'm excited to see people discussing this guitar here. Still someone reading along here?

basically I completely fell for the looks of the Jagmaster and feel it could be an interesting project. It's unlikely I'll be able to find a CIJ one at an affordable price (see quite a few in UK, but they are all pick up only), thus it'll probably have to be a CIC II one.

Thinking of coiltapping it and maybe replacing the pickups for something more useful. But I've never done anything like it and have no idea of the potential costs associated with that. Or whether the guitar is really worth it. Just the looks though... Worship

The Duncan Design pickups are great. Even the no-brand pickups on the Sparkle CIC's (Silver Sparkle, Montego Black, Candy Apple Red - all basically Jazzmasters) sound great.

To put coil tapping on a duncan-design Jagmaster is usually about £20 in potentiometers and an hour of soldering. If for whatever reason your pickups aren't 4-core, more or less any pickups that cost more than about £30 each will be coil-tappable.

They're not small guitars, mind you. The Jazzmaster body is a hefty bit of wood.

Yes, I realized that. That's such a shame. I start to feel more that I want a guitar that I love, and one that isn't massively big. This might be too big for me, similar to the Jaguar. I think I will focus on finding a nice reissue Mustang, SQ Mustang, or maybe going for the bum guitar (Jag-Stang) and do a bit of work on it.
