Permalink Sold: Fender Silverface Reverb Unit

New Topic

Update 2018/12/16: Sold here to Tavo. Thanks!

For sale a 1976-1978 Silverface reverb unit. I didn't look too closely at the date codes, but I believe this one is a 1976, based on the A6xxxxx serial number.
Good condition for its age. See pics for more details.
As you are probably well aware, these units don't sound like the 6G15 reverb units. Since I have 5 other tube reverb units and a Surfy Bear, I didn't invest in modifying it to be similar to the 6G15 units.
Priced to sell at $350 OBO only to SG101 members, and I would currently prefer to deal locally in So-Cal (I live in Escondido, North San Diego County, but occasionally go to shows in Orange County and LA).

Did a quick few seconds of recording, though realized it was a bit bass heavy after the fact.

Congrats Ran, I have never heard one of those and would have liked to have heard more on your demo but glad it found a good home.
Ps...that's a beautiful Tremolux!!!

Congrats on the sale! It sounded great in your demo in spite of, well, what you mentioned. Not very nice of him.

Ben and Matt...I find the Tremolux quite useful for recording.
And here's a longer bit of doodling I did, with the unit on 7/7/7.
Forgive the various flubs, I realized I never recorded the unit, and wanted to capture what it sounds like before it goes to a new home. Lots of words on the internet but no sounds to back them up.
As described in the comments on YouTube, I accidentally plugged into the Normal channel instead of Bright Channel (compare how I usually set the EQ on the Bright channel to avoid getting too much low end).
Also note, this unit has an Accutronics pan, which I never found to be drippy. I use Gibbs pans in all my other units.
So, sorry I didn't think of this earlier and optimized the recording, but at least I captured SOMETHING.

Hey Ran, that actually sounds pretty dang good!!! Thanks for the extended sound clip.

Grats on the sale Ran!

I reported them as well.
It’s fine to make those types of comments in a discussion in a gear thread, in the gear forum. It’s way over the line to take a dump in anybody’s f/s thread.

Thank you, and agreed! No problem with opinions in the gear area.
The fact that it is a Silverface was reflected in the price, which was set so someone can play around with or mod without a large investment.

Ugh. This was the deal of the century! Wish I would’ve seen it sooner. I play all sf gear, and I would love to have a matching reverb unit instead of my RI. They are listed for fortunes on online sites, though, Cry

I have one of these and an old ‘62. The ‘62 is much drippier, but the 70s reverb is EVIL. Very dark. If I’m not muted picking, this plate-like reverb rules!

My comment still keeps popping us, so, let me clarify it.

Way back around 1961, maybe earlier I took the trip with ..... ....... and another musician to Fender's plant in Fullerton. My friend knew someone there and he was able to finagle some parts for our guitars. He was also able to get a couple reverbs which we agreed to pay for a week or so later

Move forward to the mid 70's (my date may be off) where Dick Dale had a night club in Riverside. I saw the SF reverb unit in a pile of junk and when I examined it and noticed it had extra driver tube, I figured it would have more punch than my 61: I wanted that sucker. When I asked Dick about it he said he was going to use it as a boat anchor because it sounded like %*@#, so, he said, take it if you want.

I did, but when I got it home it did not sound like my 6G15 or anyone I ever heard. Because the signal was weak I replaced many components, exchanged some with my 6G15, but the signal remained tinny, like signing through a tin can.

Since then I have heard at least a dozen 75-78's and they all have a very thin sound; each required maximizing all controls to get any pop. Maybe all needed repair work and the one being sold here did not!!

Anyway, Dick will be performing in Riverside on Saturday, January 5th. I shared this post with him to get his input. On that note, whoever bought the subject reverb, bring it to the show and I will put it on stage for a comparison. Get a hold of me and I will walk you into the event so you won't have to buy a $30 ticket. Plus I will buy you dinner.

Now, if Dick says it sounds like *%#@, then you pay the cost of the $30 ticket and buy Dick and I dinner.

For the record, when I made my post it was not to upset anyone, just to alert those seeking a vintage reverb, thinking an inexpensive 75-78 would be a good deal that would sound like a 6G15. There is a reason the 76-78 Reverb is inexpensive, around $500 according to Vintage Guitar.

Dude, why do you keep trying?

This is bizarre. I don’t care what dick dale or anyone else says. I make my own mind up about gear. I would dig an sf reverb unit specifically because it sounds different to the more typical early units. I’d trade my mint 63 RI in a heartbeat. The problem is that, despite what your blue book research is showing, these things are listed for close to $1000, typically, online. Way too rich for my blood. $350 was such a stellar deal, by comparisaon. Kicking myself for missing this one. Congrats to whomever it went to.

Not only this is well said, but it is actually the ONLY right thing to say my friend. I stick with my trad sound, but it's a choice. I certainly would not care less of what DD says about my sound Big Grin I am not DD, I am Lorenzo Valdambrini Surfer Joe. You are free to like my sound or not at all.
