Permalink SOLD June '65 Refin Jaguar

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Got this locally today. It's a nice Jaguar for someone who wants the real thing but for a better price. June 1965 neck date, all original electronics, original case, just been refinished a long time ago and has a Repro bridge on it. Plays nicely with minimal wear on the neck. Frets have a lot of life on them. Looks like it was originally sunburst, but the whole body has been sprayed. Neck was not refinished and has checked nicely. Little area of the neck pocket shows original color. refin has lots of checking/cracking on it, so I think it's nitro paint. $2250 shipped CONUS

Too big for a stocking stuffer, but the price is right. I have it on OSG as well, but hoped someone here would pick it up. It's a good axe and could be yours!

Shock Drool

Just played this Jaguar tonight at rehearsal. It plays great and sounds great. I do think that the wiring needs to be checked out as the lower switches aren't working as they should. They work a bit strangely and I can't figure them out. They don't cut off the pups, but they do change the pickup configuration, so I think the previous owner wired it up to his liking. Therefore, I think a tech going over the wiring/switches would be ideal to make sure they are in correct working order. If I start working on it, I'm afraid that I'll get attached to it and want to keep it. That'd be fine to me, but not to my wife (a few of you I know are in the same boat) Anyway, here's a great vintage Jaguar that I would be willing to make a deal on for another surf guitarist. My price is a bit negotiable, so please don't hesitate to make an offer. I'd like to have it go to someone in the surf community. I won't let it go for any less outside the community.

Thought this would go quickly. Glad it didn't. I'm on break now and started working on it, so I'll keep it.

I wanted this, but I JUST bought another guitar and need to thin the herd a bit before picking up another.

Good luck with whatever work you’re doing on it. Post some progress pics and thoughts!

Cool, I will. I have this habit of finding deals and trying to pass the deal on to other players, but it always seems to be the wrong time. I would have let this go for around $2200 because I have just about that much into it. When I trade into things, I always keep account of what the value of what I had to trade that went in on the deal. But I started tinkering and now I've ordered a few parts to replace, so decided I may as well keep it.

It was a deal for what vintage guitars are going for these days. I've got a US Mustang bridge replacement for it and ordered the plunger and mute. The bridge it came with was not a US reissue, so that was my first change. I also noticed that the tuners were not all original, but don't mind about that. It's funny, but when I was looking at it, I didn't think to look at the tuners as I was more interested in seeing if the electronics were all original, which they are. I have an extra set of aged Kluson-style tuners that I'll swap out just to keep it looking uniform.

I was initially thinking that I'd paint it, but then again, the refin is actually quite old and has aged/cracked to where it looks pretty damned cool. I'll make a decision after I take it all apart to check all the wiring. The refin is pretty thick, so I may change my mind again. As of right now, it plays and sounds pretty fantastic. The oddly wired lower switches have me curious, though.

I have quite a nice little Jaguar family now. My wife doesn't like it, but I sure do. Smile

Here's my Jaguar family:
The surf green one is my '62 build with the Musikraft neck that just kicks butt. Then there are the '63, '64, and the latest, the '65 on their respective cases.

The '64 is actually blonde/ash, but looks like the other two white ones in the photo.

Nice family!

The Scimitars

Well, it's back up for sale. My wife wasn't happy with my decision to keep it. It's all functioning fine after going through it all. I just didn't replace the masking tape. Wink

Here's the post for what I did to it: https://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/31545/

I was really happy about everything but making my wife happy is what's more important, right? Smile So, I'd like it to go to a surf guitarist, so hit me up. I did list it for $2500 online, but not on Reverb or OSG. I would take $2250 shipped CONUS ONLY for this group.

The logical solution here is to keep the Jags and sell the wife. But whatever you do, keep that surf green job with matching headstock -- it is gorgeous!

lol, thanks! I built that surf green Jaguar myself. It started out as a Squier, but the only thing left Squier is the body. I did the same with a MIM 60s Lacquer Jazzmaster, but I didn't swap out nearly as much on that as the pickups on those are GREAT! Both of them have Musikraft necks on them and I highly recommend those.

Hard to justify having three guitars of basically the same color and era. Now, if you had painted it red or something else, maybe you could make the case.

Can you actually tell a difference in sound or playability in that one vs. the others?

I happen to really like white and tort, can you tell? LOL

And, yes, there actually is a difference in the feel of all of them. To me, the real difference is in a vintage neck. Some reissues come close, but there's really nothing like a vintage neck. I actually think that Musikraft makes REALLY good necks, which is why both of the surf green guitars have them.

Pickups to me are a little more difficult to gauge. I do think that the Pure Vintage 65 pickups Fender did for the AV65 reissues are damned good and priced decently.

I agree totally on the vintage neck feel. I've got a '67 sunburst Jag, and I've yet to play another guitar that feels so nice in the hand. I've got an Allparts neck on another guitar, and that one is nice, but still not as good. I'll have to check out a Musikraft neck one of these days.

Pickups are difficult to gauge against each other. I love the way my Jaguar sounds, and even though I'll play other guitars more often (mainly because it's more convenient to play them rather than get the Jag out of the case), when I do get it out and play it, it's usually pure joy to hear. Reissues are tricky because they may be made to vintage specs, but the vintage pickups have aged and probably sound somewhat different than they did when new (which is what a lot of players say, but that's really hard to show without a time machine). So maybe Fender's Pure Vintage 65 pickups are tweaked to sound like what the vintage pickups sound like today.

Bumpity for a very nice vintage Jag...
