Wow! Sounds pretty cool, thanks for the tip!

To make it easy, the link in the news article takes you to a German page. Here is a rough translation of the write up:

jpc.de wrote

Deep inside the LHI archive hid a mysterious tape labeled "Woodchucks." It included a "lost" instrumental surf album recorded by Lee Hazlewood in the early 1960s. Some of the songs were later recorded by The Astronauts, Jack Nitzsche, Dick Dale & His Del-Tones, Takeshi Terauchi, The Ventures, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), The Trashmen, The Challengers and The Surfaris. Hall's original Lee Hazlewood photographs were never released.

Light in the Attic Records continues its Lee Hazlewood archive series with this very special release. No reissue, but a brand new, never before released time capsule from the surf era. "Lee Hazlewood's Woodchucks - Crusin' for Surf Bunnies" is the perfect soundtrack for sun-baked skin and salty waves and summer love. It's the Californian sound of the American dream of the early 1960s.

Although Lee and Suzi Jane Hokom had not met at the time, they both lived that dream - Suzi with her group The Surf Bunnies and Lee with surf music productions like "Surfin 'Hootenanny" by Al Casey, Hal Blaine and the Young Cougars and » From Sea to Ski «by The Glaciers.

So cool! Preordered!!!

Thanks for sharing this. VIVA LEE HAZLEWOOD!!

WHOA!!! I just heard the samples, and while the well known versions of these songs, for the most part, are better than the ones on this release, it is still very, very cool! I'll definitely be ordering this one and will see if I can stock it in the Double Crown shop as well!

Are these really all written by Hazlewood? On the new Woodchucks release, I'm seeing some songs that would appear to be Martin Denny compositions, but maybe they worked together? Very curious to verify if Hazlewood should be credited with all these songs. Still working my way through the Surf Beat book and haven't come across Hazlewood's role yet, but maybe it's coming up in later chapters.

Woodchucks "Cruisin' For Surf Bunnies" tracklist:
Movin'
Baja Pt. 1
Bangkok Cock Fight (Martin Denny?)
Johnny October
The Nomads
The Man
Angry Generation
Baja Pt. 2
Quiet Village (Martin Denny?)
Batman
Torn Sarong
Crickets of Karachi

Likewise, I noticed that the production values were top shelf. It brings to mind Jack Nitzsche’s “Lonely Surfer”, but without the orchestra.

My guess is that the personnel used would be names we’d recognize. Tommy Tedesco or, Howard Roberts or, Billy Strange or, Al Casey or perhaps David Gates, maybe even Barney Kessel. (Gates did the Bass VI work on The Lonely Surfer and was quite active in the session world before the Bread era. Kessel turned up in a lot of recordings plus lending his hands to some hot guitar scenes on the Andy Griffith Show.)

Whoever was on it, these were not some kids that rehearsed in a garage somewhere. The musicianship was excellent, the arranging top flight and you could have heard a pin drop in the studio between takes. The clarity and openness of the room ambience is astounding.

Quiet Village was written by Les Baxter, but this version is a very different arrangement if not an entirely different tune.

Got mine in the mail! So good! The production is amazing. So heavy, so much space. Way better than samples coming out of computer.

It’ll be a week or so. I operate on a cash basis and I’m currently having some major work done on my house, so I’m hanging onto every dime until the final bill comes, but then it’s at the top of my Amazon wishlist.

It's even different than The Astronauts version, although a little similar, I wonder which was recorded first by LH?

Got mine last week. Like Ted said, it sounds AMAZING! Great production quality, plys it’s just cool to hear different takes on some of the classics. I highly recommend picking this up

Today I got my copy of the cd.
Music is brilliant as expected.
Well written liner notes.
I´m a little disappointed about the foto of The Surf Bunnies,
I had expected some old shots from the 1960´s.
Unfortunately the names of the three women shown are not mentioned.
Nevertheless a good buy and I do recommend it!
