Cool photo @Samurai! How useful do you find the different amp models on the THR, or rather: how useful are the more gainy models for you? All reviews I find focus on playing them with gain all the way up, which isn't helpful for me. Btw, what settings do you use for a cool sound?
Regarding Fender Mustang: What about the I instead of the II? It's certainly smaller and would not cause much problem. Plus it's really cheap.
I find them very useful) Not talking about some heavy stiles (I like to play some Metallica or Iron Maiden stuff sometimes)My favorite sound for classic surf is Mesa-Boogie (that they call Modern) with low gain and high level, punchy and crisp! Marshall style amps are nice for some Link Wray style or garage. I also enjoy Vox and Fender emulations there with gain pushed a little bit. Reverb is pretty decent and tremolo is nice, that's basically all that I need.
Thanks a lot Samurai. This gives me something to think about, between the THR and possibly the smallest Fender Mustang. The THR is much smaller, but also a LOT more expensive. So I guess I need to decide on my priorities. In the end it's always about compromising, and I guess I need to decide on how much to spend vs. space.
Not for all! Think, try 'em and choose) As for me THR is a head over Mustang in terms of sound (tube-like dynamics!!!) but it's just my opinion and you may enjoy Mustang as well. And yep, it's pricey(

D'oh, you suggested I or II. Forget my previous comment. Yes, I'm thinking about it. Still a bit on the big side (doesn't fit underneath my bed) but might just about work.
Agree) I play a lot of surf with telecaster and love it) Not a main surf guitar for me, yes, but it's nice)
Oh gosh, don't tell me I will have more guitars in the future! But anyway, yes, I love my tele and teles in general. Off to learn now. Need to get faster.

Yeah, I've been looking around. I might be able to get a second-hand one for below £200, which is still within the budget I set myself. Btw, did you try the C version? You wrote that you also play higher gain music, but if you didn't would the C be a good option for you? I'm trying to eliminate all non-viable options for me to really focus on the best choices - which isn't easy if you're a beginner

I've tried all the three versions before buying
THR10 is the most versatile, from clean to hi gain
THR10C is a kind of bluesy-hard rock beast as for me, also some nice clean amps, has nice Tape Echo instead of Delay
THR10X - hi gain mostly but great ones
But the point is that you can be pretty clean even with high gain amps but not dirty enough on clean and crunchy ones)
I personally liked the amp choice on usual version better but it was a hard choice(

Thanks a lot. I think I'll eliminate the C from my choice list. It tends to be a bit cheaper but I guess it's a bit less desirable for the reason you mentioned. The X really isn't the kind I'd like. Mind you, I have an ammocan standing in my livingroom to store my small pieces outdoor gear that looks very similar in shape and colour

So does the deluxe setting on the Yamaha 10c stay clean all the way? I like the idea of that model for a bit of dirty rockabilly and surf...but wondering if the earlier 10 version would suit me better. Tape delay setting sounds good

I would say it’s starting to breakup pretty far and depends on how much gain you use, cause these two controls - gain and master - seem to emulate two amp stages (preamp and power amp) and a kind of influence each other like in a real amp. When preamp is pushed harder the breakup is sooner, but you may be clean all the way rolling it back. That thing I love about THR most of all, it behaves like a tube amp and you are comfortable with it even after two hour rehearsal with Twin Deluxe)

Nothing wrong with a Telecaster. I've heard Telecaster players with a much more convincing surf sound than many with "real surf guitars". Surf guitar is 50% attitude.

Hi!I have a J&D tele (cheap chinese guitar but a very good one).My amp is a Fender Mustang V.2(20 watt).I play Surf,Rockabilly,Psychobilly and sometimes Metal!I am very happy with it.I love the clean tones of this amp.I think that it is the best choice for that money because it is Fender and I don't have to buy any pedals to get the sound I want.If I want to get some drippy surf sound I use my Behringer RV600 Reverb Machine Effects Pedal .

@Samurai, are you talking about the 10C or the C? I know you have the vanilla version. I'm about to eliminate the 10C from my list as the C might just be a bit more versatile. On the other hand, if the 10C gives me the sound I'm after then there's more choice even on my list sigh

Thanks a lot James! At the moment the Yamaha THR10 and the Fender Mustang I V2 are at the top of my list. The II would be too big and I don't need that much volume. The Mustang I would just about fit underneath my bed (the new Mustang GT40 would not, thus that's a no) so that's a viable option. And I should be able to get it locally second hand for fairly little money. Depending on how learning to play works in the end I might look at some pedals in the end, but that's still a bit in the future. Lets see At least I'm able to play the first easy songs now (unamplified).

THR10 has the Clean amp that is basically Twin Reverb as far as I know
THR10c has the Deluxe amp that is Deluxe Reverb I guess
They sound and behave pretty similar as for me

Mustang I will do just fine. I keep one as a shop amp & I've been impressed with it since day one.

Well my query about the Yamaha 10c was prompted by a review that stated that the deluxe setting stayed clean all the way... obviously we have a gain pot and master volume so I was curious about that comment. Can it be coaxed into some breakup? Not just in theory....I know how a gain pot is meant to work.

To be honest, I'll probably stay with my fender vibro champ XD as I love it so much and suspect anything else will disappoint. But I blew it up and thought I'd need something new. But then I fixed it....you know how it is when you get an attack of GAS

Well, my Fender Mustang is currently on the way to me. I managed to find a second-hand one at a very good price. Can't wait to finally play my guitar amplified Apparently it's loaded with metal presets. Looks like a factory reset is in order there
