Thanks for the heads up on the Mattson 2, they sound great! Here is another one, which even features a short glissando!

Joao Erbetta is a jazzy musician who made a very surfy record.
Got to see him perform several years ago in the Dc area, very cool!

I learned guitar from this 1960 Album from the Ventures "Walk Don't Run"
on this album, they covered Duke Ellington's "Caravan" I was 13. The Blue Hawaiians did it on their "Live at the Lava Lounge" CD, I could not find that version on youtube, but, I did find another live version, really nice. JAZZ fer sure... Aloha, Kim

I really like that Joao Erbetta material. That’s exactly what I shoot for in the band I belong to. The Guitar doing some heavy lifting, backed by a great drummer and a great bassist. It’s an open sound and there’s really nowhere to hide, but it keeps the guitarist very busy.

We’ve been recording some material for a band demo lately and it’s amazing just how fine the balance is, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My inspiration comes from Jazz and the tight sound of a Guitar/Bass/Drum trio. Jim Hall’s “Live!” from 1975 is a perfect example. I can’t afford to pay people to come and listen, and that’s about the only way you can have a reliable audience playing jazz, these days Smile so I’ve applied my Jazz interests to something entirely different, Classic Rock, Classic Country and Surf.

The earlier Frisell clips were quite interesting. Frisell was known among Denver musicians in the early ‘70s and I was introduced to him in 1972. He was quite good at the time, all of 21 years old and fairly shy, but a monster player.

Another Texas band I need to recommend in this thread: The Gentle Grifters. The guitarist and bassist spend most of their time gigging in '30s style jazz and swing bands, lots of Django covers. This band is them taking that approach to surf, I really dig it.

A bit older thread BUT - does anyone have more to add to this?
I like it !

We did this a few years back.
We had/have more jazz influenced material that we haven't recorded yet.
Maybe someday.
I love Duke Ellington and Jazz inspired vintage soundtracks.
They often work wonderfully with twangy guitars.

Cheers,
Jeff

I've always liked "Gotham." Jeff, how many songs do you guys have banked for some future release?

I really like jazzier instro tunes, especially the darker, cooler stuff I tend to think of as "noir" (which might be a genre I made up).

The Mystery Men?
El Capitan and The Reluctant Sadists
SSS Agent #31

Gotham kicks ass!

I really like that. It covers a lot of ground, Noir, Surf, Bebop, you name it. Great material and well played.

Cheers,
Jeff

The new album “stay gold” from the 427s is top-notch and you can hear subtle jazz influences along with slick trad surf. I’d give this album 9/10.

Are there any Surf bands or musicians that fuse and mix jazz with the surf format? Eg I have heard Bill Frizell play straight surf tunes with extended jazz soloing over the changes. Be interested if any straight ahead jazz players have taken surf or instrumental tunes into that style?

Try Italian Surf Acadamy's album Barbarella Reloaded (yes a remake/reinterpretation of the Barbarrlla soundtrack). Merges a number of influences - they take a jazz trio approach. A pretty good effort.
