I came across this video and I was a Hawkwind fan before I was a surf fan. After watching the video, and now a dedicated surf musician, I realize surf strikes much the same musical nerve that Hawkwind did back in the day and now it is much the same in reverse. Hawkwind is very much an instrumental band and even vocally it is more instrumental in the way the vocals are delivered. Interesting.

Phil Dirt Reverb Central is another Hawkwind fan. I've long given up being surprised who's turned onto Hawkwind, could be a lady in a shoe shop or a local councillor.. it's quite funny considering they started out as anti establishment freaks although I'm sure it was always the plan to infiltrate the system!:) For sure underground music often had long passages of instrumental soloing and in the case of Hawkwind they'd be classified as progressive space rock which I guess you could say surf music is early rocket age but I can't see the correlation between the two musics otherwise. Producers in the world of techno music have said bands like Hawkwind were a huge influence and I can see and hear that 100%.

I became aware with the Levitation album which is just fantastic. I don't dare to say that Hawkwind is surfy at all but that if you like surf you'd probably like Hawkwind and visa versa.
