Permalink Pedal chain order

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Yo 101! Ok im still getting into the whoke surf guitar thing. The OFC has lost a drummer but another is in the wings. In my down time Im getting some shit sorted which includes some pedals.

Im putting together a pedal board so I can jam at a mates a bit easier and dont need to lug my amp.
So heres what I need help with.

Which order best suits Surf Guitar for reverb and echo. I reckon my trem pedal is best last in chain but Im unsure about the other two.

Ive got some half decent boxes- FRV, Echorec, Pipeline. Please if you guys can help me decide the order that will be cool.

The photo shows a quad linear pedal power supply I just built. The power is clean and will outlast any crap switch mode power supply bullshit!

Cheers

You got the right idea Z, but I trust you'll try all the combinations yourself, because your ears are awesome. To imitate a classic chain - tremolo last like in amps, reverb first to hit it with max fidelity.
Cool PS!

Thanks Ariel, from Israel to Australia looks like this sirf shit isnt going away. I guess Dick dale had a friggin good idea in the first place!

I prefer delay-reverb-tremolo chain
Delay and reverb are on most of the time

I agree... tremolo last. It allows for much subtler settings. Not that subtle has ever been a concern of mine! ;) My chain is tuner > ac+ overdrive > amp. The tc hall of fame reverb > voodoo lab trem are in the effects loop. The spring reverb on my amp (which sound pretty darn good) is after the loop, so if I ever want to get really cavernous I just turn it up.

I've always preferred reverb after trem, but I usually use more shallow/faster trem settings, with a pedal (Strymon Flint). If I really want "choppy" I'll set the amp trem that way (BF Fender or Ampeg Reverberocket II), after the reverb.

I put my Nocturne Dano Brain first, because that’s what Tavo’s instructions say to do Big Razz

Then to my tuner

Then my oil can delay

Then to reverb tank

Then to surfytrem

Then, if I am in the mood, to my Julia: a chorus/vibrato hybrid that gives me a subtle weird modulation that sounds a bit like a wobbly record.

If I want dirt, I have a Timbo OCD clone that I put after my dyno brain.

Tuner> EP booster> Boss trem> Strymon El Cap split to reissue tank and tube amp and Topanga and Peavey Bandit.

Dunlop Cry Baby --> DigiTech Synth Wah --> Keeley Compressor -- > Wattson Super Fuzz --> EHX Pitch Fork --> Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble --> DigiTech TR-2 Tremolo/Rotary --> MXR Carbon Copy --> Ernie Ball Volume Pedal --> Fender RI '63 Reverb --> Fender DRRI

Nope.

Tuner > Boost > Trem > OD > Fuzz > Phaser > Delay > SB Reverb tank

I'm expanding my pdealboard a bit, so I may play with the order. I could put my tank in the front of the chain...

The Reverbivores - we're local favorites!

Thanks for the input fellas. Heres my big rig!

My signal chain:

Korg Pitchblack Plus
Bigfoot fx Spaghetti Western Fuzz
Tech 21 Killer Wail wah
Tech 21 Boost Distortion
Joyo American Sound (used for light od)
Joyo Delay
Strymon Flint reverb & tremolo

From there, it’s into two ZT Lunchbox amps.

TS, delay, univibe, reverb unit. Overdrive from the cranked amp. Cool

I have finally experienced the joy of the Surfy Bear, so I can experiment with this. I find putting the tremelo after the reverb sounds weird. Very bold and kinda harsh. I always used the "square wave" trem so I switched the softer "sine" or round wave and it's less harsh. I dialed the amp reverb up to 3 which also smooths that out. But I think ultimately I'm putting the reverb last.

Delay before distortion or between overdrive and distortion yields better discrete echoes. Catalinbread demo videos point up the way overdriven echoes sound fatter than echoed overdriven signals.
Even modulation and filter effects sound fuller and richer before distortion. But these days I am reveling in the cranked sound of the Ceriatone 20 Marshall Lead & Bass, sort of a Plexi-Lite, volume tamed by attenuation, so I am moving away from the Fender clean sound with this rig.
Placing similar effects at different places in the signal chain allows for more flexibility. E.g.,
tape echo > OD> Analog delay> (Phaser)> (Flanger)> OD/Distortion> Reverb
Thus Delay and Flange can be before or after OD.

Squink Out!

In the same mindset I have a od "boss blues driver" before my phaser then followed by 2 or 3 more dirt pedals but having one mild od before the phaser gives me the option of making it more prominent or more in background

My board has a TC Polytune3 => CB Echorec => CB Topanga. I recently added a CB Valcoder Tremolo. I emailed Customer Service at Catalinbread and asked, in my particular setup, where do they recommend the Valcoder should go. David at CB was very helpful. He stated that there are no hard rules regarding pedal order, but that I should try the tremolo between the delay and reverb. The reason being that reverb should be the last thing you hear, just as the natural reverb in a large room happens last. To me, tremolo before reverb sounds good. I've not yet tried the Valcoder last.
