All,
I'm tired of lugging my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe up to New York each year. We play Otto's which is a small club. Too heavy and too loud. Also, at practice and gig I have to keep the volume between 1 and 2 or it's just blast people out of their seats. Here is what I am thinking.
1) Stereo split my Blues Jr. (already have) with a Fender excelsior (would need to purchase), ($300-400 option) which would give a pretty good volume, but eat up floor space and wiring
or
2) gulp... buy a Fender Deluxe Reverb used ($600-800)
Okay SG101ers, weigh in.
Thanks!

Actually, the Deluxe Reverb (42 lbps.) is a little heavier than a Hot Rod deluxe (41 lbps.) according to the official specs, so in that regard a switch probably wouldn't help.
A cheap alternative may be to built a "volume box" for the Hot Rod deluxe, which basically is just a volume control to be plugged into the effects loop.
But then you still have to carry that amp around... (I have one too.)

Thanks; weird smaller looking size made me think it was lighter.

I urge you to consider Quilter amps. Several benefits including very light weight, consistent tone at all volumes, excellent direct outputs.

Just use the Peavey Classic 50 house amp at Otto's.
Actually a really fine amp!

BJ not loud enough or not enough headroom? DR shouldn't be much louder but prolly has more headroom until breakup.
I might try putting the BJ into a loud 1x12 cab. Weber makes some speakers that have "loud" as one of the adjectives.

Thanks Tailrocker - Blues Junior tone too weak and my drummer and bassist would eat it up alive. I'm the lead man, gotta cut through!!!

I don't know if I'd recommend the reverb on it. I just brought my outboard reverb and it sounded pretty good. As you know, it can be rough dragging an amp through that front room when it's crowded, but just a guitar and a tank isn't too bad.

Skeets, I just may do that. Would be nice to leave amp at home!
How is the reverb on it?

Thanks, yes the logistics are rough there, but man best crowd in the world to play for and extremely fun bar...

I'd vote for a Quilter head and small, efficient cab/speaker.
Whisper quiet or screaming loud with the same rig.
or
Princeton or Princeton Reverb with an efficient speaker, maybe even a 12".
Oh and, no split, two amp thing.
More stuff to carry, load in.
Cheers,
Jeff

I saw a video on Facebook a few days ago with the Nebulas playing at Ottos.
Dan used the Peavey and Mike used the house Marshall. \m/ \m/
Anything you put a reverb tank in front of will sound ok.

I can attest to what Danny says about Quilters too!
I believe that was yours I borrowed at Forbidden Island last year?
That thing sounded sweet!!

Yes it was Paul, I have a Steelaire model combo with the single 15, weighs 30 pounds or so. I also have the 101 -50w reverb (I won at SG101 last year!) and owned the original MP800 which weighs 20lbs and is 200watts. There are lots of options out there. Knowing there's an amp at the club already, I'd just bring my tank and some pedals. Do they mic the amps at Ottos?

Nope, it's a tiny room.

If a Deluxe reverb is more amp than you need why not go with a Princeton Reverb reissue. I have an original BF model and our rhythm player just bought a reissue with a 12 inch speaker. Both sound great and have plenty of volume for a small venue. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender/Limited-Edition-65-Princeton-Reverb-15W-1x12-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp-Bordeaux-Reserve-1440515358734.gc?cntry=us&source=4WWRWXGP&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsYmDssqJ2wIVUVuGCh06ugp0EAQYASABEgKmTfD_BwE&kwid=productads-adid^172488555108-device^c-plaid^143202139242-sku^1440515358734@ADL4GC-adType^PLA I personally like the sound of the Princeton better than the Deluxe - it is a little less aggressive and very warm.
