Permalink Ghastly gear?

New Topic

Super nerdy thread topic here out in the open.
Listening to Ghastly Ones cds, both ‘A-haunting We will Go-Go’ and ‘Target: Draculon’ I am captivated by the great playing all over them and by the bitchin guitar tones. There is a quite a difference in sound between these two discs, showing a development in the sonic concept of the band. On the first disc, Garrett nails fat trad surf on steroids sounds I’m guessing produced with a Mosrite and BF Showman? Draculon indulges some more mid-60s sounds: dryer, fuzzier, more overdriven.
Does anyone here recall guitar gear details of those bygone recording sessions?

Garrett was definitely using a Mosrite and a cranked BF Showman on "A Haunting We Will Go-Go."
For "Target: Draculon" I would imagine he was using a Mosrite and his blonde Bandmaster. The fuzz on that record would have been the D67 Audio Fuzzmite he was producing back then. Blended with the Bandmaster being cranked as well.

I think my favorite of his tone would have been on "Unearthed." For me it's like an improved version of his tone from the first record.

I happen to be rocking that same gear except for the fuzz box, but I sure can’t play like Dr. Lehos.
I doubt I will also stumble across a copy of ‘Unearthed’ at Goodwill and doubt I’ll be shelling out $95 for one of the only NOS discs for sale online. Is a good digital copy for sale anywhere?

It’s youtube, but beats nothing...https://youtu.be/Lbsaz9qWpME

Other than A Haunting We Will Go the Ghastly ones are a little hard to locate and when you do the price is.... well, ghastly. As noted there are full versions on YouTube.

I recall seeing some live videos around the time of the Target Draculon release and Garrett was using a Strat. Not sure if that's what he used in the recording? But it does sound a little Strat-like.

When I saw them in Pittsburgh in '07 he was playing a Yamaha SGV

There is definitely some other guitar besides Mosrite on Drac and I’ve seen video with him playing that SGV. I also happen to have one of those too. But still can’t play like that!

Garret is most known for the Mosrite, but he has been pictured with quite a few guitars throughout the years.

With Draculon, no way he didn't bring a shitload of guitars and some other amps into the studio. Haunting may have just been a few being so long ago.

Garrett heavily modifies his guitars and winds his own pickups.

He once told me in passing that his favorite tone is a Mosrite into a Blues Driver...there may be some secrets lying within that!

I know so little about Garrett besides the evidence of his genius on these few recordings. He built and sold fuzz pedals and improved guitars besides. Did he quit playing guitar like Marcel Duchamp from painting to play chess for the rest of his life? What’s his story?

I know he still plays at least sometimes. I just saw him last summer with Venturesmania at SG101 Convention.

He’s definitely still playing, but he was staying Georgia for quite some time working on The Walking Dead. He’s no longer doing that and was doing for makeup effects work on The Orville for a bit.

You can definitely hit him up on instagram, @garrett_immel.
He’s been working on some rad guitars, including a 6 string Mosrite bass.
