This is a random YouTube find. They are almost an early surf band!

Kids got the jimmy legs!

OK, well putting the dancing aside (if that's possible) as I think about it, this is extraordinary. The Beach Boys first hit "Surfin" was released in December of '61. These kids are already anticipating hot rod songs even before that! Not to mention the plaid shirts and Fender gear. And check out the Duane Eddy "Movin' and Groovin" quote in the guitar solo. Classic first wave influence.

Considering they had to have been practicing and kicking around before this t.v appearance, it would make them at least contemporary with the Bel-Aires. And this is happening on the East Coast!

I stumbled across this on YouTube myself a couple of weeks ago and love it. I hadn't thought about the fact that it pre-dates the Beach Boys' earliest releases - which makes it even more remarkable, of course. I wonder what happened to these young lads. I can't find anything about them on the Internet. What I have found are articles about two other American bands of the same name, one from Meridian, Mississippi (http://continentalsband.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/continentals-band.html), and another from New York City (https://vimeo.com/117167841). If I remember rightly, the Continentals in the YouTube video came from somewhere in New York State. "The Continentals" is clearly a popular name - a German rock 'n' roll band from Munich and an English covers band from Chester currently use it.

It's also a model of luxury car in the U.S. I remember there used to be a Sha Na Na type band called "Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids".

I think to Jeremy's(Aqualads) point in the other thread, the phenomenon which birthed surf music was a much more widespread and national phenomenon and followed a less strict development than some histories would have it. I notice the trend in surf comps to dig up more obscure and regional material to paint a broader picture than one restricted mostly to Southern California.
