String thickness is not the single thing to look at...some brands of strings and some variations within those brands have different tensions.

A wound G string from a pack of D'Addario XL Chrome Flat 12s (diameter 22) is 34.04 pounds
A wound G string from a pack of TI Jazz Swing 13s (diameter 21) is 27.30 pounds

Good point regarding string tensions from brand to brand. Size and shape of the wound string core has a lot to do with that. Thinner cores usually equal less tension, thicker core more tension. I'm a big fan of pure nickel wound rounds for most guitars, especially with single coil pickups. A little softer, smoother feel, less strident sounding and a bit easier on the frets.
