Permalink Pot Taper

I just finished rewiring my Stratocaster and thought I should share my findings.

I decided I wanted to go to a simple master tone and eliminate the volume knob right next to the bridge and I also wanted to brighten up my sound so I got a 500K audio taper pot for my volume (middle hole) and a 500K linear taper pot for the tone (back hole.)

I put it all together and found that my tone was like an on/off switch with no roll off from 10-2 and then all off from 2-0. And my volume dropped precipitously from 10-8 and then slowly from there. Not ideal for me.

So I looked into things and decided to simply swap them. I know a linear pot for volume is counter to popular conception but I've found that it works great! And the audio taper pot on the tone brought a similar improvement. Now each of them sounds--"seat of the pants"--about halfway through its spectrum when the knob is on 5.

So there you go. Linear pot for volume, audio pot for tone.
