Dig the idea. More than a few "normal" bands seem to do an unexpected surf tune now and then. Wall of Voodoo did a cool spaghetti western medley as well.

One that's been on my faves list for a long time is "Montalban (Corinthian leather)", a very cool original surfy instro done by Trolley, which is more of a 60's-pop-vibe vocal band.
