Sorry about the tiny, poor quality cropped studio picture, but here are my two favorite surf GUITARS....
Fiesta Red 1999 "first-run" AVRI '62 Jazzmaster
Black 1984 Fullerton-built '62 AVRI Stratocaster
— Jack Booth
(aka WoodyJ)
The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005)
The Hula Hounds (1996-current)
The X-Rays (1997-2004)
The Surge! (2004, 2011-2012)
Various non-surf bands that actually made money (1978-1990)

Sweet looking guitars, Woody. I'd like to address the Fiesta red comments from the last page. Earlier I said I didn't care for Fiesta Red, in fact I bought a CAR Classic player Jag instead of a '60s Lacquer Jag simply because of the color. This is just my personal preference, obviously very subjective.
Fiesta Red is by no means ugly, in fact I would take Fiesta Red in a heartbeat over any Sunburst Jag. I just wanted to clear that up, and also let everyone know that I guess I am "weird." Ha! Also, that Fiesta red bass looks sweet!

SSS, LOL, no problem. I absolutely hate the color pink and some iterations of Fiesta Red are way too pink-ish for me. Here's a picture of the bass I bought (on the left) compared with the seller's uber-expensive Fender Custom Shop Pino Palladino Precision which, to me, is....pink. Even the Custom Shop doesn't always get it right.
(Note to Brian - sorry to take this thread so far off-topic. Mea culpa)

Those Bordellocasters are great! I have a Sapphire blue one, and even though I'm not a Strat guy, I won't let go of her...

Love it for classic surf tones) but won't really work for a heavier surf rock stuff as for me.

Guess it's a closed group or something(
I know that some people manage to use this Yamaha overdriven, but mine just becomes noisy and loses all the sound density, may be it's just my problem(

Try looking up the page 'The Bay Area Surf Twang And Reverb Directory', I just posted the video there. I'm sure there are different pickups on the Yamahas, you may have gotten some that just don't cut it. I think there's a lot of talk about yamahas in the archives.

I surely read them all! And still think this is not the guitar for overdrive, may be just the slight one. Nevertheless it's a great guitar for classic clear surf tones and also got killer looks and playability)

Hmmm... I have three SGV300s. I played the SGV300 in the last weeks at several gigs with Kilaueas. It always sounded great. On SGV300 I use 10-46 strings meanwhile! I guess those guitars are not made for thicker strings, like Mosrites or similar? For Surf I play it with neck and bridge pickup.
Whatever, yesterday I played also a SGV300 in my 2nd band, it s a punkband, loud and dirty. I play it through a Marshall amp. And it sounds amazingly good! Here I play it constantly with single bridge pick up.
So, what do mean with "overdrive"? A special sound or pedal? Or just a cranked up amp?
— Twang cheers!

My Yamaha sounds brilliant clean but when the Strat when overdriven becomes an angry beast, focused and punchy, Yamaha tends to get lost in the mix with farting lows and thin plumking highs( I also use 10-46, tried 11-52 but as you said it's not for heavy strings. For overdrive I use both the cranked up Fender Blues Junior and Xotic AC plus for more drive. May it be the problem with my Yamaha or I just cannot gial propper settings?

There is no "ONE GUITAR" for any style. I love Strats (had a JM as my first good guitar because the Strat I wanted got sold) but I'm about to buy a Jaguar. Why? You can't plug a Jordan Bosstone into the top of a Strat. I figure I'll pimp it out with flatwounds and I won't have to change my Strat.
This is my first post. Some guys from the TDPRI suggested that I come over. I like what I see so far!

I like a lot...
Here are my two favorites:
1) 1966 SG Jr
2) 2015 Squier VM Jaguar...
NOTE: I've played AVRI Jag's, and the Squier is VERY close...I feel no need to upgrade the pickups even, but if I did, it would still be much cheaper than the AVRI....
NOTE II: I have to admit I"ve considered selling it to help fund an AVRI. I still would love a USA one. ;)
NOTE III: I had the Olympic white one originally, but sold it to help fund the 66...when I bought the new one, I got the CAR. Which do you prefer?

That is a beauty. I'd be happy with P-90s, Pelham Blue, and Bigsys.

I'm definitely facing a conundrum. My two six strings that I play regularly are a baritone Telecaster (partscaster), and a 1976 Fender Stratocaster, but it's a hardtail. I need to find a guitar with a bit more wiggle. It's time to start looking around.
