OK - I'm looking for a Reverb Pedal. I had outboard reverb units (vintage and reissue) and ended up seeing them - they are not perfect either.
I'm going after that 50's rock n roll rockabilly sound - Bo Diddley/Buddy Holly/Sun records/Chess Records. To me, those recordings have both echo and reverb (either room, mic placement or added during mixing with tape echo OR plate reverb) - what I'm trying to do is emulate that the best I can live. I should mention I have an analog delay pedal (older Ibanez ADL that's ok, a bit brighter than i like but pretty good pedal)
At this point I'm only interested in a pedal.
These are MY contenders:
Dr Scientist Reverberator
Catalinbread Topanga
Malekio Spring Chicken LE

I'm a big fan of the Catalinbread Topanga. In my opinion it is a great substitute for a tank and can get good onboard reverb sounds, too.
But I think for what your describing, you might look into this pedal...

I run a Topanga along with an Eventide Time Factor delay. I can get a pretty decent slap back/reverb sound with this.
The Topanga has a tone control so this might help smooth out the delay.

I sold my topanga because I thought it sounded more like a slap echo than a spring reverb.
For what it's worth and whatnot.

If your not chasing specific Drip, any of the real spring pedals sound great IMHO.. Van Amps, Spaceman Orion, etc... my experience was I always liked the real spring over the digital ones...
The EQD ghost echo was a pretty good slapback echo into reverb sound in 1 pedal.. but you already have a delay pedal

If you wann have both nice echo and good reverb in one box it's a great choice really

I'm still very impressed with the new MXR reverb pedal. It sounds very convincing.

Have you compared against a Catalinbread Topanga? I'm curious.

The old Boss delay pedal(the red one) has always worked for me for slapback but I'm not real picky.

Derek, Yep, sure have. I own both. The MXR seems to sound more like my '66 6G15 than the Topanga.

I know this'll sound stupid, but I've had great luck with the Behringer DR400 pedal - it's sort of a re-creation of the BOSS RV-3 which gives you reverb and delay at the same time, if you want. I've used it for about 5 years and it works well for me and is dead quiet....and CHEAP ($40 +/-). Started out using it for pedal steel and ended up using it for guitar in my surf band and other stuff. You might be surprised..

Not stupid at all. I still use a Behringer reverb for rehearsals. For purists among us it's not much of a surf reverb but on setting 'plate' it's not bad at all. Very little noise and it's full stereo. Good value for money too.

Interesting that the MXR sounds better / closer to your vintage reverb unit. hmmmm

To my ears no reverb pedal is a real contender when compared to the real deal, but manufacturers are getting closer and closer as technology continues to develop.

I have a Topanga and I like it a lot. I read somewhere that Wronski occasionally runs his Topanga into a Reverb Unit for some added special sauce. I gave it a go and it does work pretty well.
