Permalink Craft Beer and Surf Don't Mix!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

So this past weekend in effort to keep the band playing (no gig scheduled)I came up with the brilliant idea of taking the band to a downtown craft beer brew house for an open mic. I called in advance and set up an appropriate time for us to take the stage. I looked at it as just a little scrimmage for the band. Drink a couple beers and thrash on some surf for maybe a few people.

We showed up to a full house and several local musicians pouring their hearts and talents out to the crowd. Some of us in the band were pretty excited by it all and decided to partake and sample the fine craft listed on the menu board. I noticed that the menu included the alcohol content of the rich and flavorful enticements. I am not a drinker and haven't been for a long time. I figured what could go wrong! After 2 pints I was really fired up and about that time it was time to fill the stage with surf gear.

Acoustics wise this place sucked. Brick walls and a steel veneer ceiling. Sound and loudness would be an issue. We turned way down. I was feeling absolutely no pain whatsoever and we plucked a few notes at low volume and tuned up the guitars. At this point I'm feeling disoriented! All good I yelled out SURF PARTY!!! and we launched into attack. The rushing of blood and adrenaline began consuming blood oxygen and seemed to concentrate my blood alcohol. On top of that I had forgotten my glasses which wasn't a big deal but I do play with them when it's a bit dark so this only furthered my now pronounced disorientation. The sound was horrible so I kept turning and adjusting my amp volume while trying to get my notes in at 170 bpm. At one point during Mr Lou I actually got lost and way ahead of my self for a few seconds. Now at this point I feel shitfaced! All in all I probably only screwed up 15 seconds of the whole show but any mistakes are unacceptable to me.

We played for about 1/2 an hour to a very receptive crowd that were very complimentary of our music but I packed up knowing I had just played my worst ever in front of any group of people. I woke the next day with an actual hangover which I hadn't experienced in almost 2 decades!

The lesson for me is you can't drink and surf and it's my guess every other surf guitarist feels much the same. It's a disaster waiting to happen! Surf moves fast and you have to be in top mental and physical condition to perform it well. All concur?

When you talk about higher percentage liquid, I'm in complete agreement. Smile Some of that stuff is serious and comes in large bottles. Smile

Real world I quite like to see a band pop and misfire a little at the beginning, especially if you're thoroughbred racers like the Kahuna Kings! I'd advise keeping an eye on the alcohol volume percentage because a couple of percent extra can have a larger effect than you might expect! And rule one: never drink on an empty stomach.

It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to know that an 8 percent alcohol content beer is stronger than bud lite! This is one of my 'chalk it up to being dumb" moments!

Thanks Crumble!!! For dinner that night I had a thick and delicious Italian breaded pork chop sauteed in garlic and olive oil with a a heaping portion of pasta along with steamed broccoli. I can only imagine what would have happened on an empty stomach!

El Mirage hosted two wayward surf guitarists visiting our area a few weeks ago... namely Jeremy of the Aqualads and Jesper of El Ray (yeah, all the way from Europe). It was just a low-key huddle at Mike's (aka Morphball's) surf shack for some Sunday afternoon surf shenanigans and socializing. A very low-key affair!

Because we were rotating in/out of the lineup, there was definitely more opportunity to partake in the cold deliciousness of the shack's well-stocked beer fridge. A perennial favorite is Coco Loco from NoDa Brewing in Charlotte. This is a delicious porter, brewed with chocolate and coconut.

The session was an absolute blast and an email exchange with Mike a few days later resulted in a new quote for my signature (as seen below). Luckily the audience and musicians were one in the same for this gig!

"I knew I was in trouble when the Coco-Loco tasted like water!" -- morphball

Laughing Now that sounds like a blast! "if the Coco-Loco tastes like water you may want to call Uber for your ride home"

The Kings did a Friday night practice and enjoyed beverages a several weeks ago (typically practice sat afternoons)and we had a great evening but we eased into a few barley's after playing an hour. I'm just not a drinker and two regular store boughts have high value for me as far as consumption/investment goes. lol!

The Royal Aces in Denver are fortunate enough to play at quite a few great breweries, and it's always important for us to keep the consumption of free craft brews to a minimum!

Beer has a particularly wicked effect on me...one pint and my head is loopy and I feel sloppy. It can't be tolerance because of other bevvies that I can drink that exceeds that content - not promoting consumption or being competitive, here, just sharing how beer affects me in particular.

Maybe red wine instead of beer next time, then! Big Grin

I'm allergic to something in there. Felt like crap for 24 hours afterwards. Major buzz during. It's almost like drinking poison........

Could be a gluten sensitivity or allergy (not a doctor!). Beer affects me in a way that whisky/whiskey/English ciders don't. I'd suggest taking a look into it. Life is too short to enjoy something only for it to kick back hard and make you feel like crap afterwards. Lots of great, tasty alternatives out there.

Too heavy too. We always avoid craft beer and pizza before playing. Stick to piss pilsner or even better, some rum, whiskey or vodka. And lots of water. Smile

Two pints of regular strength beer consumed within one hour is enough to get your blood alcohol level into the "intoxicated" range of > 80 mg/dL (mg%). I have found that six to eight ounces of beer per hour is my limit while performing or rehearsing, and that's another thing to learn by rehearsing.

Beer contains other organic compounds resulting from fermentation that can cause intoxication, such as higher alcohols and aldehydes. It's not just alcohol content.

It's possible that 2 pints of craft beer could contain as much, if not more alcohol, than a typical 6 pack of 3.2. The net effect could also be increased, if it were to be consumed in a much shorter period of time.

Back in the 80s, my friends taught me me how to brew beer, and it wasn't long before my older Brother, his friends, and I were brewing some beverages of our own. Aside from the alcohol content varying from type of beverage to the next, different beverages can have a different effect on a person.

Our light and Amber Ales had a tendency to make a person a bit louder, for instance. Our crowning achievement was a festive libation we called 'Wimp Killer Stout', so named because some of our 3.2 swilling friends complained that the taste was too strong. As I seem to recall, it was about 8% alcohol. After a couple those (12 oz.) bad boys, you didn't really want/need any more. It was a mellow buzz, and all you wanted to do was kick back, listen to some Robin Trower, have a sandwich, and take a nap. (Hey, it worked for us!)

If one is going to imbibe, and perform on the same evening (or afternoon, for that matter) it's important to know when to say, "When".
(Sorry, but I felt compelled to include that Public Service Announcement. Wink

Shake, Ted, Squid, thanks for your drinking and gigging advice! We just don't talk about this enough on SG101. Sure we have plenty of advice for a gigging surf musician from amps, strings, pickups, reverb tanks but nothing about alcohol consumption at the gig. Now we have case histories with proper documentation of statistical data including numbers.

If I could make a confession......that was a good buzz! Just wish I knew before playing Big Grin

Specifically, we liked the 'BLT' album he did; the one with Jack Bruce and Bill Lordan. Great stuff.
