Totally agree about the pronounced Bass described above in the Surf setting.
Different speakers can help if it's a problem.
This plus a few other conveniences are pushing me towards a Micro Pro head.
I do still very much like my 101 though.

Cheers,
Jeff

My thoughts as of late as well, though if Quilter were to alter the Q101 to include BASS & TREBLE EQ instead of the Hi-Cut I'd likely be completely satisfied with the 101.

With that said the Q101 is an incredible value imo for $270 and produces some serious tone. Again, if Showman like thump is what you're after, it's got it.

Yep. I agree once again.
In fairness, the Lead and Full Q sounds can do great Surf tones as well in my opinion, especially if you roll out the mids drastically in Full Q mode , but more for smaller rooms. They definitely don't have the boominess

Jeff

Nice micro rig! I have my heavy music version of this at home, which I carefully pieced together (Traynor DH15H, Egnator 1x12 loaded with an Eminence Swamp Thang). I would love to have a compact, easy to move solid state rig like this for surf tones too. I have no need for one personally right now, since I'm not in a band or anything.

I don't know if you already said, but which speaker do you have in that Avatar cab?

I'll be waiting to hear more and appreciate the impressions. I'm not automatically looking for a mini-package Showman tone. One has to remember that a Showman is often used with a 15" or at least a 2x12" speaker. And the controls are typically (that I've seen) Treble substantially up, Bass rolled back, with some Presence dialed in as well to add sparkle to the output section.

I run my Bandmaster-like channel in my Vibrolux that way, but with a pair of Jensen 10's that already have robust bass response, are slightly scooped, and are sparkling on the high-end. I suspect there are many personal variables (including whatever the usual room size is). But the typical amp tone controls are usually interactive (at least Fender & Vox tone stacks are); where rolling bass or treble up/down is going to do something to the other, as well as adjust the frequency where any dip in the mids resides.

This is a valuable thread and it's always helpful to get impressions from someone whose sound you're familiar with rather than a kid scratching out a video demo at a store.

So I finally pulled the trigger (found one used on GC's site for $200!). Like many have stated, the 101 is a bit bass heavy but on the lead setting with the gain about 2.5, the Tri-Q almost completely to the right, and the Hi-Cut all the way to the left I was able to almost exactly recreate the sound of my beloved silverface Deluxe Reverb through the same cabinet, which is exactly what I was going for. I ordered a Princeton sized open back, pine cab and 4 ohm Jensen Jet Tornado from JD Newell so will now have very light weight rig that can handle any situation. Thanks so much to Jeff (who has spent WAY too much time and effort answering my questions) and Doug for all of their valuable insight and suggestions.

With the help/advise/tips on here, I just purchased/received my new Quilter 101 Mini. My current amp has been a 1964 (AA864) Fender Bassman (50 watts RMS) with 2 Jensen Neo100-12 speakers (using the NORMAL channel). Even with the neo speakers, my back just can't handle dragging it around. I plan to scale down on my spkr. cabinet too, but here is my initial tone/volume settings comparison, using the same Boss reverb setting and the same speaker cabinet. They were sounding about as equal as my ears can decipher. Even with these settings, I think the 101 Mini was just a tad louder... I also liked the "Surf" setting but I seemed to control the highs more to my tastes with "Jazz" setting.
Details:
The Bassman is a true AA864 with all JJ tubes, cap job, biased, etc. The speaker cabinet has a small amount of "modern" batting style insulation (not the trad. Fender stuff).

Hope this is useful info...

Wow, I've been watching a lot of demos and I'm pretty impressed.

I only have a low wattage tube amp right now (Ibanez TSA15) which I was thinking of selling for a Vibrolux Reverb. I might just save myself a couple hundred dollars and get one of these Quilter 101s.

Thanks for the report. I'm thinking about this exact setup, from a guy who really loves his Vibrolux Reverb. Jeff is a keeper. His advice on various speakers & things & being somewhat of a 2-legged test-bed with experienced ears is invaluable. I'm curious as to your impression of your chosen settings with the Tornado. The 10" Falcons (not a Neo speaker) are in my Vibrolux & really like them; they have some good ones in that series. I think your settings show that one has to get past a few of the preconceived notions about "where knobs should be" and let your ears be the judge. Like Jake says, they're made to be adjusted, that's why they're round.
Cool

Wes, the settings sounded vastly different on the Tornado than my Deluxe's g12c/s. With the Jensen I've landed on the Tweed setting. I've got an eq pedal coming soon I plan on running through the loop which I expect will open up many more possibilities. I'll try to remember to to post a picture of my rig when it's 100% completed and my impressions.

Are you guys running reverb through the fx loop or just regular signal chain?

This little guy can push a 6x10 Silvertone cab really well! Ears are still ringing.

Yes, I had my Zoom MS-70CDR running through the FX loop. Sounded great.

I like my 101 mini head so much that I just sold my Super Reverb RI and bought a Micro Pro Mach 2 with the 8" speaker. I put them through the open mic test, letting others play through them in various styles. Hard to believe the sound coming from these small amps was so huge, especially when using a EVM-12L extension with the Micro Pro. The 101 through the 12" sounded bigger but the Micro Pro alone seemed to fit in the mix perfectly and didn't need any pedals. It's a small world.

Wow indeed! What's YGBSM? Looks incredible.
I see that it'll be up for retail in March, after NAMM.
They're coming with very cool stuff. Love the design:

I'm gonna build me a small cab, put a neodymium 15" in it, a Surfy-Bear, a Surfy-Trem, and that 45.
Then I'm gonna put it on a pickup, and drive all over the Middle-East, spreading the sounds of love. It will be a very good portable solution. Big Razz
