Very cool and quite haunting tune from PJ & THE GALAXIES, "The Moldau" (1964)featuring the great Paul Johnson. This could be the theme for a spaghetti western.

Smetana's Die Moldau.

Killer version of "BAJA" with Fuzz and Farfisa and recorded in 1966!! A rather interesting track because of the date it was released and the fact that it's not the FANTASTIC BAGGYS but a South African Surf/Garage group called THE FALLING LEAVES!

Wow, great find, really dig the fuzz with Farisa approach!

If someone has already posted this, I'm sorry. Love the song, though.

So this was new information to me:

Some hardcore fans of the genre would credit the obscure garage band The Northern Lights with recording the first surf tune, “Typhoid,” in 1961,

That's an excerpt from this article that I randomly stumbled on:
http://archive.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/ProductSpotlight/Tone-Tips/myth-busters-dick-dale-520/

A quick search of the forums didn't turn up any hits about the band nor the song (though my forum navigation skills are suspect). Has anyone heard of Typhoid being the "first recorded surf tune"? The little bit of googlin' I did turned up the YouTube vid below. I guess these guys were from Canada(?). Maybe some Canadian members have some info/details/memories of the band the Northern Lights? Bonus points for any details about where that song title came from (yikes!).

Its pretty easy for me to believe that I am indeed, not, the most "hardcore fan of the genre"... but this tidbit still surprised me. What do y'all think?

Also, let me apologize in advance should it pain other members that I darkened the SG101 doorstep with a Gibson article Shock !

From past me to future you

Here's what I've gathered on Typhoid/Bust Out:

(1) Review by Phil Dirt, Reverb Central:

Bust Out
Pre Surf (Instrumental)

This is actually a pre surf single from 1960. Its original title is "Typhoid." It foreshadowed the double picking of Dick Dale, and the raw energy of the surf sound yet to come. Highly rhythmic and driven. Lots of power. "Bust Out " evolved from a song the Sapphires did called "Typhoid." Alan Orkins had the original idea, but we all added to it." - Don Gates Jr., drummer for the Sapphires. While basically riff rock, it has held up really well over the years

(2) Phil Dirt - article "What Is Surf" (http://reverbcentral.com/articles/what/what1.htm):

Typhoid by the Northern Lights, a 1960 staccato double picked rant later reissued as Bust Out by the Busters to capitalize on the surf sound, could arguably be the first surf styled tune recorded, much closer to the eventual defined genre than Dick Dale's Let's Go Trippin' or the Belairs' Mr. Moto, and a year earlier in release. It's main shortfall is its lack of reverb and a surf title, but, neither Let's Go Trippin' or Mr. Moto had reverb or a surf title for that matter.

(3) From a YouTube comment:

Instrumental on Patt Records MA

Fred Cole - guitar
John Chappell - guitar
Al Marczyk - sax
Phil Maddern - trumpet
Fran Parda - drums
John Baker - bass

Nice! Sundazed reissued this 45 for Record Store Day a couple of years ago. Perhaps Pat & Lolly Vegas's (Redbone) earliest recordings.

Here's some recordings from the Reekers who came from my home town, Bethesda, MD.
The Reekers became the Hangmen who had a very cool vocal garage hit with "What a Girl Can't Do"

Watching the surfing film THE LIVING CURL (1965) this weekend and this Fireball's tune came on. You hear a lot of Fireballs stuff in the early surfing films. They were one of the pioneers who were playing surf before it had a name!

There's a video on you tube called "Bust Out" by the the Busters that sounds just like Typhoid. According to info below the video, the Busters are from Massachusetts. The video is worth watching.

I know you said it's NOT The Fantastic Baggys. But a little aside, my 5 year old son has been known to sing Tell 'Em I'm Surfin' from time to time.

Nice!
