Since Dave Arnson, Wolfi (El Birkerio) and I have publicly proclaimed what an influence this post-punk british art band had on us, I thought it would be nice to introduce those of you unfamiliar with these guys. A lot of music from that era doesn't hold up, but this stuff does in my opinion. The quality and inventiveness of the songwriting really set them apart. The melody of the last one was incorporated into an early Tmen song that never was released.

We used to do Lester Leaps In in a previous band.

Yup, did you see I posted that in the 'instrumental songs by non-surf bands' thread? That song really had an impact on me.

Here's the demo of the song we adapted from Adeste Fidelis. It's a bit plodding, but there's some nice parts...

Oh yes, I knew we did another one back in the day as well, but I couldn't remember, probably their coolest instro song Andiamo!

Andiamo is quite a surprise! In a good way that is.

I remember the Monochrome Set in the music press and watching them on "The Tube" TV show. They must have dropped off the radar quite quickly because I can't remember much about them. Competitive times though, it seemed like there was 10 new bands every week! Zeros to heroes all vying for your immediate attention!

There are many bands from this era that I have heard of but never took the time to investigate. But it isn't often that I discover a band from this era somehow completely slipped past me. Thanks for this post. I am now a fan.

They are actually still around, looks like they reformed around 2010 and have put out three albums since.

I remember hearing that they had reformed a few years ago, I figured it was just a one or two show deal, but apparently they've been busy.

This is from their most current 2015 album "Spaces Everywhere"

In one of my old bands from the 80s we did a couple of Monochrome Set covers. Man with the Black Moustache, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Lester Leaps In and Jet Set Junta.
