Fronkensurf, is that a Formica top? That looks awesome!
Volcanik, I'd be very interested to hear what you think of the Vibramate.
Also, I can't resist reposting this (not mine). That Guyatone sure looks like it can surf -- it's basically a Jag in a Tele body.
any experience with this Guyatone? looks great, one guy offers for trade
how much the 60th made guitar in good condition will worth?

I have seen a pic of a similar guitar in an interview with Kahuna Kawentzmann (ex Looney tunes). Different pick guard though:

And different pickups, and reversed vibrato.

That Guyatone is way cool. I once had a late 60s Fuji Gen or Matsumoku-made Tele copy that I bet would sound great in a surf context. I couldn't sell it in Nashville because it didn't sound a play like a real Tele, I was told. Sold it in LA to a guy form a band called "Superhumanoids". I don't know if they're very 'surfy'.
Of course FMC wouldn't slap one together from spare parts to sell to the insignificant Surf Guitar market. Hooray for Japanese guitar makers!

Avoid Krylon on a guitar body! It will never cure and will rub off on your arm. Use something lacquer-based instead. There are many options.

Ooh thanks for the heads up.
Not many other options I could find in NZ unfortunately :/

And I always suggest a clear coat.
For best amateur results I find:
grain filler -> sanding sealer -> primer -> color -> lots of clear
works best

If there are no good paints available, try french polish with natural shellac, grain alcohol (surely available) and olive oil. There are lots of tutorials online. You can cover anything with it. I did it over goldleaf and black primer to very good effect.

I may still try the sparkle krylon and get a good clear to go on it.
I can always just wear a medieval gauntlet while I play to avoid my arm getting worn away by friction. Then I can do some light falconing after the gig!

I made the pick guard, the original was either gone or covered in five layers of boat laquer, like the body when I got the guitar.
The pick-ups are original to the guitar. They have very low resitance, lower than an average fifties strat, if I recall correctly.
The vibrato is from an italian made Dynacord thin line, similar to a Welson.
I don't know the manufacturer, but I guess some japanese 70s brand. It had a very light ash body

Did you use it for any recordings? Do you still have it?

I used it on Anatevka (Beyond The Dune) and gave it away when I moved to Berlin.

Ah, interesting. I just bought the CD this year and had a short exchange about it with Ralf Kilauea here in the forum.
BTW I think it's kind of strange, that we never met, even though we live in the same city and even made music with the same people. You should come around to one of our gigs! I would be interested in your opinion about Los Apollos in their current incarnation.

Solved: my brother still has a small compressor and spray can from his panel beating days.
