It changes, depending on my mood, I guess. Strat, Airline Map, or Danelectro Hodad Baritone. The amp remains the same (Brown Fender Vibrosonic with 15" speaker). Rev —Canadian Surf |

Jake yeah that is correct probably only the gretsch filter-trons or something like that might work...... p90's and fender single coil do give the correct sound thats what is so cool about them ......... My other plan is that i like 2 pickup strats (neck & bridge) wired like a current tele or les paul. And with a .1uf cap on the tone possible treble bleed but not required. joe bonni |

Thanks! It plays and sounds great as well. It has SIN pickups in it which are made locally here in NC. Agent_15 wrote:

Here's my surf guitar. Actually it's my only guitar! The only one I play anyway. I've always been a one guitar guy. This baby has been with on just about every gig I've played for well over a decade! It's pretty much stock except for a few mods I've done myself. I eliminated the middle pickup & rewired the remaining two in series. I got rid of the pickup selector. (It was always in my way.) and recently ditched the volume control. But I think it has to come back. Never thought I used it that much till it was gone. (Isn't that always the way...) the pickups are stock. The neck pickup is the former middle PU. so wired in series the two are humbucking. The pickguard is from pickguardian. It's a perfect refit! It's cut for two humbuckers. I took two standard humbucker to single coil converters and flipped them over to change the angle. I've been thinking of ditching the tort guard in favor of a white or pearloid guard. Give it a classy tuxedo vibe! It plays and sounds great! —www.instagram.com/_the.outer.limits_ |

Hi guys, I am brand new to this forum. It's been about 15 years since I have played the guitar, but I am getting the itch to play some surf music again. I do not currently own a guitar, and am in the market for one right now. The style of surf music I want to play is similar to Gerry McGee of the Ventures. I have weighed the pros and cons of getting a Jaguar, but have decided to go with a Strat. My budget is one thousand dollars, and I was wondering what you guys thought of the guitar that I want. It's an American Special series Stratocaster, surf green. I would like to hear feedback from anyone who owns one or has played one. Also, should I change the strings right away? For now, I will be playing on my iPad using the GarageBand app. Looking forward to hearing you guys' thoughts and opinions! Here is a pic of the guitar I am interested in. —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New Singles "Finish Line" and "Paradiso" on Bandcamp and website. Last edited: Sep 23, 2014 17:53:12 |

I think it's a very nice guitar. Strats are great for surf music. I've used them on and off for years. Should you change the strings as soon as it arrives? Yes. Should you restring with Flatwounds? Depends on what you want. I would, but that's just me. If you do change strings - try an 11 set (you guitar might come with a 9 set, but probably a 10 set). If you do install heavier strings, make sure to have the guitar adjusted accordingly ie: truss rod tightening, etc. Also, leave your vibrato arm on. Don't remove it every time you put it back in the case. The arm won't hurt your case and the case won't hurt your guitar with the arm installed. That's a myth. The truth is, you will eventually find your arm loose and hard to keep in place if you continually thread it in and out. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. |

Thanks for the reply, I will have a professional change the strings so they can make the proper adjustments. I would love to hear others thoughts on this guitar as well. Is it really made in the USA like the more expensive strats? —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New Singles "Finish Line" and "Paradiso" on Bandcamp and website. I'll play, Jake. Looking at the curvature of where the fretboard meets the headstock, I'll guess '59 thru first half of '62, because they are all slab boards. Also, the red in the bursts on the two on the right side matches the same time period. |

Ha, Close! '58, '59, '60, '61 Unfortunately the '58 was worth WAY too much money for my buddy Mike to keep. The '61 is his, though. The '59(refin) and '60 are mine. I will sell the '60 back to who I bought it from someday, I'm just a custodian for next couple years. Dude, respect for bringing attention to the color of the burst. I can date a Jag/Jazz by the burst, and so can you! I've spent a lot of time staring at photos. These are all amazing guitars, and they are all quite different in tone and feel. The '58-'60 have the thicker body, they all have Pat. Pend vibratos, clearly very hand shaped necks(the '60 is a real treat, truly one of a kind taper), and the rhtyhm circuits REALLY work quite well. The trem springs are also all really stiff which is exactly how they should be, such amazing response(how Nels Cline does his amazing technique). |
