I watched all the Crazy Aces videos on YouTube yesterday. Good stuff. You guys are just up the road from me (I'm in Chattanooga). I'll have to get up I-24 one evening and see a show!

The surf music scene here in town is...well, there isn't one. Very Happy

Wow, thanks so much for watching!

Yes, please do come by to see a show sometime and introduce yourself.

We play in Murfreesboro now and then, a little closer.....

You should also head down to Atlanta for some of the shows we have down here as well. You're well placed!

Atlanta has a great scene with great people and really talented players.
I'd follow Jamey's advice.

Over and Over!

I was reborn into surf music via the film Pulp Fiction. Thanks Quentin! Since then it's been a road of great re-discovery. I had no idea how much alive and well the genre was, I searched out the classics first like Dick Dale, The Challengers (Surfbeat, you can't go wrong there). The Lively Ones (A personal fave), etc. So many to choose from. But then I find there's all these great newer bands Like The Varatones, Satan's Pigrims (LOVE these guys), Los Straightjackets, The Meltones and every day it's a new discovery.

For someone just entering the salty sea of delights that is surf, Those two 'Birth Of Surf' cd's put out by Ace can't be beat, great selection and sound.

So, what other new surf is a 'must have', something so good my collection wouldn't be complete without it?

Hey Superfly,

Just an off-the-top-of-my-head response...this list is only a start.

*Edited to add The Atomic Mosquitos to the list.

Seek out The Fathoms. Universally loved and considered to be among the best.

The Space Cossacks, then from there start making your way through The Madeira.

Another universal favorite is The Bambi Molesters.

One of my personal favorites is The Infrareds. Not sure how available the discs are now, but look around.

Los Twang Marvels...everything, but especially 'Jungle of Twang'. This is as mandatory as mandatory gets for surf/instro in most people's opinion.

The TomorrowMen, especially 'It's About Time'.

The Penetrators - whatever you can find.

The Surf Trio

Laika and The Cosmonauts

I'm looking at Double Crown Records' website right now, and going down the list of the surf/instro section I recommend (in order of appearance and of the albums I own):

Beware The Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion: Blood Drinkers Only
Big Ray and The Futuras: Desolation Planet
Crazy Aces: Greatest Hits Vol 2 (get Surfadelic Spy A-Go-Go too)
Eddie & The Showmen: Squad Car (MANDATORY IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY OWN IT)
El Supernaut: Plays Half Dead (get everything you can find elsewhere too)
Frankie & The Pool Boys: The Adventures Of Cap'n Coconuts
Insect Surfers - Infra Green (and everything else you can find)
Jon & The Nightriders - Stampede (and everything else you can find)
Kill, Baby... Kill! - Corridor X (and 'Sometimes They Come Back' if you can find it...ask Noah, he's always around)
Los Twang Marvels - so important I had to list it again
Los Straitjackets you are aware of...not surf, but among the greatest instrumental rock bands that ever walked the dirt in my opinion. Get everything you don't have. They only get better with each release.
Southern Culture on The Skids - mix of surf and vocals. Always a lot of fun.
The 'Verb
The Bomboras (personal favorites)
The Coconauts
The Concussions (get it all...now)
The Ghastly Ones
The Kilaueas (are you broke yet? keep going)
The Moe Green Specials (this disc is WORTH IT)
The Secret Samurai
The Shockwave
Inserting from memory real quick: The Barbwires. Seek it out.
The Squares - Eight Songs (find Teenage Surf Madness if you can. this is really a seed-planting album for me. Message me if you can't find a copy)
While I'm on the 'S's...Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
The Surfites (super trad)
The Tikiyaki Orchestra
The Trabants
The Untamed Youth (mix of surf and vocals)
The Volcanics
Threesome

This list is only my personal experience with what's on Double Crown's website right now (except for the top portion). I know I've left some stuff off, but this should get you started.

The Mystery Men?
El Capitan and The Reluctant Sadists
SSS Agent #31

The Kilaueas, everything, but especially their new cd or LP
wiki waki wooooo

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Richard, THANKS! That's an amazing list. A lot of out of print stuff on there but I'll do some digging (which is half the fun). I managed to snag a couple by The Bambi Molesters today, and I already have a couple by the Bomboras (excellent choice).

I'm not broke yet, but I'm gonna be!

Yo Superfly,

Be sure to check out some of the Mexican Surf / Instro bands (too many to name); Mexico is really a hotbed of new Surf music right now.

A great 2nd Wave Surf Band (Surf Raiders) just released a new / old album. Definitely worth a listen.

Also don't bypass Link Wray!

METEOR IV on reverbnation

I just spent some quality time in the art studio listening to the two Bambi Molesters cd's I've gotten: 'as the dark wave swells' and 'sonic bullets'.
I am just blown away. Can't believe I've been missing out on them. Not any more! Thanks guys for the recommendations.

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good website (other than here of course) who focuses on mexican surf bands? Or do you know of any previous posts here with suggestions? Thanks!

Good stuff! Thanks a lot, dude!!

Hey guys, new to this website and the suggestions listed here really help a "newby" forward, already heard some great bands!
was into surf music a bit after I have seen Jon & the Nightriders in Holland somewhere early in the 80's but moved on playing other stuff
After visiting a gig from a local band here, "stories from Shamehill" (check them out here: http://www.storiesfromshamehill.nl ) the reverb itch pulled at me again, so came to this website
And what a great place to start, I was able to find a lot of the bands listed above on spotify by the way, will pick up some hard copies of the ones I really like on the North Sea Festival in Amsterdam next month

Did a quick character-search on each page of this thread & just thought to add a few that I didn't find listed.

"Unleashed" by The Eliminators
"Somewhere in California" by The Torquays
"Grab Your Board!" by The Tormentos
"Halibut Beach" & "Gnarly" by The Halibuts (often found together as a double CD with great liner notes)

...just feedin' the search engine.
Cool
