Permalink Dave Myers and the Surftones Pictures Never Seen Before

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Thought you guys might like to see some photos that have never been released before. Shots cover the many years and many name changes. Dave Myers and The Surftones, Dave Myers and the Disciples, The Dave Myers Effect and our last name which was Rainbow.
The pictures show different band members throughout the years as we changed our names and our musical styles to fit the times.
There are more photos but I will post them at a later time.

This is awesome. Dave Myers & the Surftones had some really excellent stuff and I just heard one of the psych singles for the first time the other day. Just as excellent!

Yes, thanks very much for these. I knew the band had continued post-surf, but didn't know all the different incarnations.

Thanks Dennis!! It's such a treasure to have pics like these to see. Supercool when guys like you who were there for real share this stuff!

A few years back I found this DAVE MYERS EFFECT LP pictured below. I figure it was released around '68 or '69. It's all instrumental with some cool FUZZ. There's a cool re-working of Davie Allan's ANGRY BREED called "HELL'S RACERS" plus the theme from THUNDER ALLEY and more. This record is a cool little late-sixties gem. It's got Mike Curbs name on it of course! And produced by the Larry Brown, the guy who wrote the Angry Breed theme. Could you tell us any more about this LP. Thanks!

Thank you.

Sure...a few notes on 'Greatest Racing Themes'. Well, we recorded the album in 1966 at Mike Curbs studio in Hollywood. I think we had only 16 tracks available at the time The album was released all over the world under different covers...in fact a couple of the songs were used on a soundtrack for the movie 'Grand Prix'.
The tracks were totally different than anything we had previously recorded with a heavy influence on the organ played by Dave Mohr. We always strove to be different in our original arrangements and instrumentation.
I believe the band members at the time were Dave Myers of course, Seaton Blanco on bass, Bob Riley on rhythm, Larry Blodgett on drums, Dave Mohr on organ and myself on conga drums and assorted other percussion instruments since I hardly used my sax at all on this album...hell, what the heck.
You can U-Tube most of the album on the net.
Many of our albums and compilation albums are now available on CD but I believe this album is still on Vinyl.

Digging through the scrapbook I found a few more pics....some in disrepair for sure.
Here is a copy of the Disneyland contract when we played at 'D' land at the Spacebar...I remember it was pretty cool entering Disneyland at the employees entrance and being underground...the stage was an elevator and rose up to the Space Bar.
Also shown is a pic of Dave and Seaton hamming it up at 'D'land.
Here is a Xerox of the original score and lyrics t o C'mon Love I wrote in 66.
A couple of Dave's business cards at various times.
A pic of me with guitar in a Fender ad.
On stage at Lake Arrowhead during the summer tambourine in hand.
The group shown in Laguna Beach in 64 or 65, not much left of the photo.

Priceless stuff, Dennis! Love the Disneyland-Surf Band connection at the Space Bar in Tommorowland! Avengers VI and a few other surf groups played there. Always wondered if anyone has any super 8 home movie footage of any of that. That would be amazing to see.

Thanks for shedding more light on that GREATESTS RACING THEMES LP. Seem like a classic Crescendo move to repackage it with different covers. Fun record with a later 60's vibe. I dig the organ and fuzz stuff.

I was wondering about the Harley Hatcher and Larry Brown penned songs. They "wrote" some of the stuff that Davie Allan recorded for Curb as well. Did they provide demos of that stuff , or did they play the melody on a piano in the studio, etc? Any recollection of how those songs were worked through?

Not exactly sure about some of the Hatcher / Brown stuff but if I remember right the songs were penned and given to us beforehand by Curb, no demos, etc. We did our own arranging of the material and I think Dave Mohr our organist brought a lot to the party in this example.

A few of the albums and compilations.

Dennis, wow, thanks so much; you have a number of 'surf music historian' types here(incl. me) and fabulous when an actual band member shares content and recollections. I have Hangin' Twenty, Lost Legends I, Surf Crazy, and will make it oh so much better when I listen to your music again.

Dennis, this is awesome, please empty your vaults here! Many thanks!

$24 for 3 sets at Disneyland? I thought they paid better than that.

Going through the old scrapbook I found this pic and it brought back some funny memories. If I remember right it was 1965 and we were doing a gig with the Chantays in Santa Ana Ca.
Obviously the Beatles were a big deal so of course we had our Nehru suits on and as a joke we put on Beatle wigs. We had bought them at a drugstore that day and wore them as we did a cover of 'I want to hold your hand'.

A couple years ago I wrote many of my memories, experiences and insights while in the group from 1962 to 1969. I may publish them here on another thread.
