Lots of well known & obvious choices already covered, so aside from my #1, made a go of bagging' some vote counts on deserving cuts that are probably outside of the total vote top ten (and definitely above #102!)

There are two important rules that I keep in mind: If somebody comes up with a list of more than 10 tracks I simply do not assign any points to the bottom tracks of that list (regardless of the order). A Top 10 is a Top 10. Totally fine with me if people want to display a Top 11, Top 15 or even a Top 50 up here but the Top 10 tracks are the only ones gaining any points. As for as the order, if people come up with a list on alphabetical order or if they specifically mention the list is in no particular order I give all 10 tracks equal points. I do however strongly like to discourage this since it will make the actual Top 101 far less distinctive. Please take some more time and decide on the order of your tracks. If you had to make a choice to bring only one track to that remote tropical island? Which track would that be? And what if you could bring a second one? etc. etc. Should be possible for everybody. If people have a list that is not numbered, not on alphabetical order and they do not mention there is no particular order I assume the top entry is #1 and the bottom entry # 10 of their list. All entries so far have been accounted for and I will not be making any changes to those entries since I made the rules perfectly clear at the start of this thread. For future entries I would like to kindly like to ask everybody to come up with a NUMBERED TOP 10 IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE! One last thing about not having a particular order in your list. The total ammount of points to divide is the same as with a Top 10 with a particular order. In a list with no particular order all tracks get the same ammount of points whereas with a Top 10 the number 1 gets a substantially higher amount of points as the number 10. If you have 10 tracks that very little people support in no particular order it will result in none of your tracks entering the Top 101 whereas with a Top 10 in a particular order your number 1 is likely to end up in the Top 101 a lot sooner. BTD, I think your comment warrants a response, as it could potentially be interpreted as derogatory and/or condescending towards the songs you cited, all of which are overwhelmingly respected and revered, as proven by the voters participating in this list. The purpose of this list isn't about coming up with the most obscure, rare, or seldom heard songs, it's about "your all-time favorite Surf Instrumental tracks." The difficult part for some might be digging deep inside and removing all of the years of influence that may have clouded one's interest in said songs. Have we all heard those songs more than any others in the repertoire? Of course. Does that mean that they don't deserve to be favorites on the list? Certainly not, as has been clearly proven by the voters. Sure, we've all seen the eyes roll from the disillusioned and jaded Surf concert-goers when "Pipeline," "Wipeout," "Misirou," or "Penetration" is played, but one has to keep perspective when considering the songs in the context of a list like this. To say a list might contain "just" those songs, as in--those songs are lesser or some kind of compromised choice--is disrespectful to those songs and those that included them. When was the last time that you tried to strip away all outside influence, sit down and listen to those songs intently and actively and appreciate them for what they are? Just because they're played more often and better known, doesn't mean that it's any kind of cop out to include them in a list of favorites. —Insect Surfers |

Like I have mentioned before in this thread: I feel with the Top 101 we are not necessarily seeking the historically most important tracks, neither are we necessarily looking for the obscure stuff. We are looking for the most popular tracks today! I think everybody should include their personal favorites of what they call surf, disregarding any outside information regarding popularity, obscurity, importance, milestoneness or whatever. In our opinion The Surf Top 101 should be a reflection of what the 101 most popular tracks are among lovers of surf music and what they experience as surf music. We have been having an interesting debate at North Sea Surf Radio whether to include tracks not considered surf music by the official rules and standards (West Coast early 60´s etc.). What to do with tracks by The Ventures, Link Wray, The Shadows, The Spotnicks and Yuzo Kayama? We have been asking ourselves that question and had an interesting debate about it. Is it our role to omit "non surf" tracks and educate? We feel it is not and in the end we at NSSR all agree that it are the votes of the surf music lovers that count. The Classic Surf Top 101 will be a reflection of the most popular tracks today that people consider surf, regardless of its roots, influences, the line up, the gear or the effects. If you´d play some records that are strictly surf to a person interested in surf music but not necessarily a specialist and you would mix that with Euro Instro, Eleki and Rautalanka it is very probable they would all consider it surf music. And what if we would be applying strict purist surf rules to the Revival Top 101? We would have to skip the majority of material by The Bambi Molesters, Laika and the Cosmonauts, Messer Chups, Man or Astro-Astroman?, Daikaiju, The Mermen, The Phantom Four,Hawaii Samurai... and the list goes on. So no, we are not going to do that. Let the people decide what the best instrumenal surf music is and if enough people feel a track is surf worthy and vote for it we will add it to the Top 101. Unless it is a vocal track or it very clearly belongs to a totally different genre like punk, bossa nova, drum & bass or cajun. At least these lists bring about some interesting discussions and make everybody revisit their favorites and rethink their personal definition of surf. That alone has made doing this list worthwhile already. Keep those lists coming! Cowabunga! p.s. sure, when I first heard "Misirlou" by Dick Dale it made all my hairs stand up straight and made me want to break speed limits on the highway. But playing hundreds of shows with The Phantom Four experiencing hundreds of unexperienced DJ´s that all felt with a surf band in the house they should play "Misirlou" that feeling barely occurs anymore. I simply heard it too often. "Exotic" by The Original Surfaris now does that for me and that´s why that track is my number 2 and "Misirlou" is not even in my list (anymore). And a year from now that could very well have changed. That is what will make this list interesting for the years to come. Which tracks have gained popularity and which tracks are fading? If we would want to compile the ultimate historical 101 classics in surf music we should let some historians and music journalists make a Classic Top 101 and we can write that in stone and will never have to look back again. It would be a one off.
