Anybody here ever play an Aria Mosrite?

I came across a few the other day online for a good price and considered buying, but thought I'd check here first.

I saw some hanging up in a music store a while ago and kept on walking past.

Not a serious guitar, stay away from it. Even after a PU switch, it still doesn't nail that Mosrite sound and plays like a log. It hardly stays in tune as well. Save up for the real deal or get a Hallmark. Just my 2 cents. YMMV.

thanks guys.
that's why I come here. Good opinions and good music. Smile

+1 on the Hallmark. More than worth it.

I thought you guys were talking about the Aria Ventures model. I saw them at the NAMM show in 2001:

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

I was referring to the Aria Diamond DM-380. Looks basically like this model, but with a strat whammy system. Can't say much about the Ventures model. The PUs look quite similar to the stock ones on the DM-380. Those were some terrible PUs.
Check out this thread.

Those Aria 'Ventures' models don't have the reverse body style of the Mosrite, but the Diamond DM-380 does. Also, the ventures models didn't end up with the mosrite style vibrato system as shown in the above picture. They had the Jazzmaster style. I recently saw that there is an upgraded version of the DM-380 now available that includes the Jazzmaster vibrato. None-the-less, there are MUCh better Mosrite styles available, including the Hallmark, Eastwood, and Depinto models.

Also, here is the Wilson Bros. page, which is what the Aria Ventures models are marketed under. Honestly, I really hate the looks of these.

You might even go with one of these Jay Turser models.

This past summer, I had occasion to see and try one of the Wilson Bros guitars. The owner was as proud as hell about it - part of his massive "Ventures collection" which, oddly, contained no Mosrite guitars. I felt the neck, looked at the workmanship and the pickups. In short - PURE CRAP in my humble opinion.
I said nothing to the owner - why burst his bubble. The guitar neck felt more difficult to play that my worst ever Mosrite (and I've had several of them). Maybe I'm just spoiled having played on the "real deal" over the years.

And I've mentioned this elsewhere in this forum:
I find it a bit curious that Don Wilson had his issues with the Mosrite guitar - with the slim neck and over wound pickups; goes back to Fender Jazzmasters; then (badly) re-imitates the Mosrite guitar but with a Jazzmaster tremolo arm (aesthetically not pleasing - at least to me).

The last few times I've seen the Ventures live, that Aria/Wilson guitar stood out - most notably because it really sounded terrible. They do look pretty, though. I hang with my 40-50 year old stash of the genuine 'M' stuff.
But - to each his own poison..
J Mo'

Johnny, you are more kind than I am. I honestly believe that these Wilson Bros. guitars are ugly as sin. Perhaps it is conditioning, but I just cannot get past the Mosrite design applied to a non-reversed body shape.

I am, however, sure that if you threw in some Hallmark or Mosrite pickups they might have a decent sound that is pretty close to what most of us Mosrite/Hallmark lovers adore.
