imageHopefully not off-topic...just got a Fender-accessory cover in for my Excelsior in today, Sweetwater on sale, $21.99 plus free FedXGround...

One other thing, finally tried the amp with my early-60's-something Fender Reverb, seems to lose some of the clean headroom the amp had with the Jag straight in. Must play with it more, but that is the initial finding, would be disappointing in this manner for "surf."

Makes sense. When putting an outboard in from, you are essentially placing a preamp in front of it. Outboard have a natural slight overdrive of their own.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

Free rip has it for all 4 discs.
My disc 3 won't boot in 3 different computers, but plays fine in CD player...

...uh, now I am really confused...

However, in regards to the Excelsior, probably will try a 5751 into the first preamp position to reduce the gain a little...

Hi all,

I have one of Leo's later designs, a G&L SC-2. It looks blue in this picture but this one is Belair Green or Pinecrest Green in Chevy speak. I put a TUSQ nut on it and some locking tuners and it stays in tune pretty good now.

image

Agent, tell us how the Reason amp is for that clean surf sound...a friend had a little green combo (seemed to have about the same control layout as yours), and it was marvelously Marshall, but there wasn't much clean headroom there...mayhaps yours is a different model?

"Our favorite Central New England Music store" is a G & L dealer and he has an ASAT in Vintage White and an little blue SC-2 that I have coveted for quite some time. Am I guessing that the MFD p'ups make it a Mustang on performance-enhancing-drugs?

The Reason Bambino is a nice little home amp that uses a pair of 6AQ5/6005 tubes at 2 or 8 watt settings. The nice thing is that these are not used in many amps so you can still find NOS tubes for less than $10. Sound wise they are in between 6V6's and el84's.

It has 3 modes, the Normal mode just has a Tone control and a pull Fat switch, it's got that Marshall midrange with the Fat engaged. Dimed in 2 watt mode is very AC/DC. But clean without the Fat switched on, it sounds real good and you can add a lot of chime with the Tone control.

The Bright mode is the Fenderish clean with pull Bright, Treble and Bass controls. The Mids are scooped a bit when Bass is maxed. It's got a nice Princeton type vibe to it IMO. In 8 watt mode you can run the gain up to about 6-7 with single coils before it starts getting crunchy. I really like this mode a lot, for home use it's more than enough volume, but it would be hard to keep up with a loud drummer.

The Stack mode runs the Normal into Bright mode in series and adds a Master Volume. It's more compressed and can get tons of gain, it can get a bit harsh with the Master Volume up high. But it can get some great Stones or early Zep type sounds too.

There is very little headroom in Stack mode or with the amp in the 2 watt setting. There is also no reverb or trem. But it does have a vintage vibe to it and for the price that you can find them at used, it's pretty hard to beat.

I should also mention that I have mine running into a closed back pine cabinet with a Jensen Neo Tornado. So that is much different than the combo's which come with the Eminence Wizard or Private Jack.

Reason has a new model out called the Reato that is a single channel amp with Reverb and the old '61 type harmonic vibrato that I would love to have!

They are really great guys too! Obeid also designed the Ampeg Jet, Reverbrocket, SuperJet etc... and he's a great player as well.

I love that description Smile

The bridge PU is a bit hotter than the ASAT, I think of it as a rock tele sound. It can nail Led Zep 1 sounds with gain. The neck PU is fuller and brighter, so it makes for a nice mix with both PUs on. It has it's own sound, but it's in the neighborhood of the popular surf guitars for sure. Anything with a trem should come with locking tuners IMO, it didn't stay in tune very well before I added those.

The SC-2 has gone up in price about a hundred bucks since I got mine a couple of years ago. It's still a decent price for a Made in USA G&L, but it's always best to buy G&L used, they really lose resell value. Although it seems G&L has been getting more popular lately, I suspect it might have something to do with the popularity of the ProGuitarShop videos of all things.

Thanks dp Smile

hi!
well - being a friend of short scales and guitars with non-slanted pickups and only one screw in the back (for the strap pin), my choices are limited. i am in the process of abusing some of the M3-pickups to mod a firebird studio into something that gives a surf sound, but until then, this is my twangy weapon of choice for our modest efforts at the time being:

Image on Flickr

it is a reather cheap (for a semiacoustic) chinese VGS mustang II. I liked the looks and the resonance of the whole thing when being unplugged. after removing everything that is removable and replacing the machine heads with grovers locking tuners, the saddle with bone, the korean dogeared somethings with TV Jones classics, the electronics with some decent stuff, the bridge with a schaller roller bridge and the tailpiece with a bigsby ... to put it in short - after slight modifications incuding the strap buttons, it is a very twangy, chimey beast. not necessarily a classic surf sound, but very creamy and fitting the genre somehow ...

... at least it works better than a P90 equipped Les Paul ...

This is my collection. I just received the Mosrite-ish yesterday. It's an original Mosrite body, built out by M3.

The Archtop is a Hagstrom J-550, that after $1000 worth of mods, I've decided I hate, so I'm selling it. I pickup up a Gretsch, instead, but it's still in the shop.

The black jag is one of the much-maligned 2012 thinlines, I've had it re-routed for an end-jack, a one-piece pickguard cut, and a re-issue Duncan JM bridge p/up installed. Pretty much the same story for the white jag, only it's an '88 reissue, that's seen some shit. Was my first guitar.

I'm done buying guitars now. Whether or not I'm lying when I say that, has yet to be determined.

Cheers,
The Damnthing

Geeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzz
This is an incredible thread.
I'm new to this forum.
Have all the older "pre-1970" surf music.

But, I thought I was "Hip Cool & Trendy" because
I owned all of the Mermen and Aquavelvets albums.
Wow! Did not know about all of the modern surf groups
you guys are listening to.

Question: Is there a link or list or something that
discusses the better modern surf groups?
PLMK. Thanks. Toppscore Cool

My favorite surf guitars are my
Fender Stratocasters and Fender Telecasters.
That's all I own Cool

But, I do have:
1954 Fender 5D6 4x10 Bassman
1960 Fender 6G4 2x10 Super Amp
1962 Fender Reverb Tank
1964 Fender 4x10 Super Reverb amp
1964 Fender 2x12 Twin Reverb amp
1968 Fender Bandmaster Reverb amp head
1968 Fender Showman Reverb amp head
and a ton of rackmount and pedal effects.

Should only need my guitars and Fender reverb for surf music,
but, I do play other types of music. Great thread, guys Shock

Welcome aboard. The whole forum sort of discusses modern surf bands, except when discussing older surf bands and gear, but this is a good place to start: http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/20637/ If you scroll down you'll see a post for all the previous years. And, check out the music review forum and so on. Then, there's this discussion about surf music generations: http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/2950/

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

And now, back to the regularly scheduled topic. I think this is just perfect. Well, it would be if it were mine.
