Can someone point me to a list of the best surf Music releases of 2012? Can you provide your top 10?
Thanks,
Jason

(for me) the Continental Magazine is one of the best place to find fresh music

original compositions (low-level demo stuff /out of tune, etc) myStuff not my best, but i don't like to be in a musician community without anything to show

There have been a HUGE number of surf releases this year, it's become overwhelming, and there are many that I haven't heard yet (or that I just got recently and don't know very well yet). But here are just a few from 2012 that I think are truly excellent:

The Phantom Four: Morgana (Netherlands)
Bevel Emboss: Celluloid (Netherlands)
The Atomic Blast: Hypnosis (Finland)
Bang! Mustang: The Big Twang! Theory (Germany)
Los Straitjackets: Jet Set (USA)
The Concussions: Fall In Love With... (USA)
Los Kahunas: 7 Mares (Argentina)

I'd be really hard-pressed to rank these, they're all great! I highly recommend them. I've probably left something out, too.....

The releases I kept coming back to this year are:

Los Straitjackets: Jet Set
The Concussions: Fall In Love With...
The Ramblin' Ambassadors: Ramble On
Los Straitjackets: 2x5 single
Reissue: Shadowy Men On a Shadowy Planet: Savvy Show Stoppers

plus Venturesmania: Bound and Sidejacked Again (Dec, 2011)

edit: Can't believe I forgot this one...The Madeira's release is fab!

Ha, well let's not forget some great ones not mentioned out of modesty:

The Madeira - Tribal Fires
Reverend Hank - Longhorn

Some other great ones:
Surf Zombies - Lust for Rust
The Aquatudes - Unsafe at Any Speed
Jaguar & the Savanas - Wet Side Stories
Man or Astroman 7"s
Mike Barbwire - El Sotano Calling 7"
The Spaceguards - Multivision
The Grande Bois - Apocalypse 2012 (just got it and still forming an opinion, but impressed so far)

Some that I believe are from this year, but found 'em on Bandcamp so not entirely sure:
The Infra-Men - Mercy Kill a Burning Man
Outer Space Heaters - Desolate Surf

and two that I'm very excited about but are a bit too pricey for me to import
The Good and the Bad - 034-050
The Routes - Instrumentals

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

This year, I would have to rank my top 3 as follows:

1 - The new Man or Astro-Man singles. I have loved surf music since I first heard the 1st wave bands as a kid. But it was my discovey of MoAM in the 90s that converted me into a full blown surf nerd. I love these guys and cant wait for more of their epic music!! I love these new tunes, not as surfy as they are garage-y, but still amazing music!!!

2 - The Madeira - Trible Fires - This album is abosolutely amazing from start to finish. The musicianship is top notch, the song writing is without peer, and the energy is off the charts! I can't imagine a single one of you hasn't bought and repeatedly listended to this album by now. But if one of you let this album fall through the cracks, then stop what you're doing and order this album ASAP!!! Trust me!!! It will melt your face then make you beg for more!!! It will be a hard album to top, but I am sure Ivan and crew will be up to the task!

3 - Phantom Four - Morgana - Holy moly the rhythm of this album is so infectous that even a boring square would tap their foot and bop around to it! And it is relentless from start to finish! Excellent!!!

Looking forward to next years crop of reverb drenched tunes!

Cheers!

i'd like to add the new supertones to the list

Wow, I've got tunes to check out. Thanks for all the replies. Keep 'em coming!

As best I can remember from what I got this year. These are my favorites.
Madeira - Tribal Fires
Los Straitjackets - Jet Set
The Atomic Blast - Hypnosis
Diamondheads - Sonic Blue
Rev Hank - Longhorn

There seem to have been a lot fewer this year when compared to 2011. With the usual 2-year-cycle between releases, I am curious to see what 2013 brings.

I haven't been able to pick up much this year, but here are my standouts.

Madeira
Concrete Rivals
Threesome
Surf Zombies
Monterreys
High Fidelics

The album titles are slipping my mind at the moment.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

my favorite of the year

Pyronauts - Play for Surf Big Grin

The Delights of Surf!
Discogs

I'll add King Pelican's EP and the Crazy Aces debut to the pile.

I can't decide between Man Or Astro-Man? 7" and Tribal Fires by The Madeira. I think both are on another level.

ElMonstroPorFavor, great you are interested in The Good The Bad's new album. Unfortunately production costs are higher than average in northern Europe but TGTB have just announced some good value bundle deals.

The album trilogy on CD digipak is now £29 and the first album has just been re-released on pink vinyl! It's bundled with the latest album on white vinyl for £29 too.

And here's an interesting review of the new record Smile

Funny you mention that, I pulled the trigger and got the 3-pack just this morning. Already got the 2nd one but I'll find a friend that'll take it

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

Bevel Emboss: Celluloid
The Atomic Blast: Hypnosis
Los Straitjackets: Jet Set
Los Kahunas: 7 Mares
The Madeira - Tribal Fires
Man Or Astro-Man? - Both 7"s in their Analog series
Mike Barbwire - El Sotano Calling 7"
Blind Rage & Violence - The End Of Rock & Roll (not all surf, but I really dig this CD)
Maeds Dominos - The Big T 7"

I had some others on the list that I reviewed in the new Continental magazine, but had to cut them since they weren't released this year.

Surf CD's / Vinyl / Fanzines / DVD's
The Desolate Coast - Without A Planet CD
Hipbone Slim aka Sir Bald - Wiggin' Out With CD
Continental Magazine - Issue #36 w/21 Song CD

Favorite album: The Madeira - Tribal Fires
Favorite EP: The Exotics - The Enchanted Interrogation Room
Favorite collection: The Space Agency - Galactic Guitars
Favorite half of a two-disc set: The Phantom Four - Morgana

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I have to admit I have not stayed on top of the new releases this year, and I am shocked by how little of the releases in this thread I own. Hmmm. I will have to fix that.

Of the ones I do have, I was absolutely blown away by The Madeira, The Exotics, and The Phantom Four. Three very different surf bands, but all truly amazing in their own way.

I have the Space Agency collection, but I need to listen to it a few more times. I also greatly enjoyed the King Pelican release. I was also surprised by the EP from The Reigning Monarchs. They aren't typically what I listen to, but I dug it.

Another stand out for me this year is The Concussions "Fall in Love With". I look forward to the "break-up" album, which should kick all kinds of ass based up on the description I have heard.

I also enjoyed the Atomic Blast CD, it is always good to hear great music coming out of Finland (huge Laika fan here).

Thanks for starting this thread, now I know what I can spend some Christmas money on. Smile

Not a bad year for a 'dead' genre, huh? Big Grin

There have been so many fantastic releases this year! Too many to list and impossible for me to come up with a best of. These are the ones that are still in steady rotation on my stereo.

RoadRunners "Rampage"
Rev Hank "Longhorn"
Maeds Dominos "The Big T"
The Madeira "Tribal Fires"
The Shockwave! "Death Race"
The Surfaders "Dragstrip Murder Mystery"
Biarritz Boys "Enjoy the Hip, Slick, Ultra-Violent and Super Sexy Surfsound of ..."
"Brave New Surf [VA]"

Also:

Hell-O-Tiki "Attack of Lady Octopussy"
The Phantom Four "Morgana"
Los Fantasticos "The Devil Went Down to George Street"
The Mariners "Demon Surf!"
Meshugga Beach Party "Hot Rod Hanukkah"
Pedrito Diablo & Los Cadáveras "El Cuerno del Chivo"
"Il Triello: Three Western Tales [VA]"

Sheesh. I could list even more, but perhaps that would be compulsive, like my buying habit ...
