Permalink speaker recommendation for blackface bassman?

New Topic

Hi folks, I picked up a 1966 fender bassman recently. I need to add some decent speakers to an old cab I have to use this as my go to amp.

I have a pair of Celestion seventy 80s in a traynor combo amp I am not using that I was considering pulling and adding to the baseman's speaker cabinet - but before I go that route I wanted to seek the advice of this community. My goal here is not originality (i.e., NOS fender speakers) it's tone.

So...what would be the best options be for a pair of 12" speakers matched with a blackface baseman for surf? My seventy 80s? Other? Suggestions welcomed!!

thanks in advance. Smile Smile

Your Celestion Seventy 80's should only have 4 mounting holes on the speaker frame.
If your 1966 bassman has not been messed with it will have 8 studs for each speaker.
So that will be an issue that needs to be taken care account of.

A pair of Jensen RI C12N will give you back the Fender chime.

Thanks Bob, the 1966 baseman is a head only. The 2X12 speaker cabinet is not fender, but it is of that era. Thanks for the advice on the Jensens. I'll look into them.

Search the gear forum a bit. There are a ton of threads on speakers.

I use a 1966 Bassman, my cab has 2 Electro Voice EVM12L which sound loud and fantastic but they are expensive (unless someone gives them to you) and heavy. My cab weighs about as much as a Twin Reverb now. The cab originally had Carvin speakers that were a copy of Celestion 12Gs and they sounded very good as well, I would have left them in if I hadn't scored the EVs.

EV-12L's........simple. WoodyJ and I both recently loaded a pair of these each of one our small 2-12 Fender cabinets and we agree, the sound is Massive. I also have the following small 2-12 Fender cabinets loaded as follows:

2 modern Fender Twin Reverb speakers. Nice and smooth early break up
2 JBL E-120's Damn loud but a bit raspy check out the Instro Summit Vid.
2 Peavey 1201-8's Brilliant loud and clean. JBL D-120's on steroids.
2 Stock 65 Bandmaster speakers. Nice, smooth but not very loud or robust
2 EV-12L's....no contest and they take NO prisoners. Wall of sound.

I had a pair of V-30s in one and they were awful.

eddie k.........EV-dude

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

I have a pair of Eminence Red White and Blues with my Bassman head and they do the business for me.

My Silverface Bassman runs 2 x 12" Weber Californians...they sound great!

Is there any speaker that doesn't sound great with a Blackface Bassman? I don't think so.

you know, I think you are on to something here...

previously, I ran 2 x 12" Celestions and they sounded good and mean...and the original Utah 12s didn't sound bad either...

I do have to agree with you though, the ElectroVoice (EVs) sound monstrously beautiful!
