Ah, semantics, idioms, grammar and attempts at humor. These all can cause misunderstandings, not to mention the different ways we each use English. My wife and I both use the same words, but I'm convinced we don't mean the same things when we say the same things. When I was in graduate school, all the international students told me they thought we (Americans) were nearly unintelligible.

I once got in a world of trouble for using old borscht-belt humor on someone who had never ever heard any of the old jokes before. "Are you thirsty?" I say. "I'm fine, thanks." She says. "I'm sure you are, but are you thirsty?" I say. Do you know that is considered a dirty joke in some circles? Professional misconduct she said.

And you wonder why I want to be a surf musician? Still do, but it's even happened to me here.

I don't believe every opinion requires an "IMHO" just like I don't believe every joke requires a Big Grin . But they DO help and are harmless I suppose. IMHO Big Grin

I also believe it's wise to assume the best and don't assume you're being insulted, no matter what it seems; it probably isn't what you think. But complements should always be taken at face value.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Well said Noel

Ivan, I was in no way stating that Brian or anyone else should try to dictate how people interact on here. I was simply giving the point of view of what it can sometimes seem like to a newcomer. I do believe that as musicians we owe it to each other to dictate ourselves. I always make a concerted effort to encourage newcomers in any way that I can. I personally feel that no good can come from telling a person that what they can afford is crap. For most, if the equipment most on here desire was a financial option they would have gone with that.

Encouragement is important. Ivan, when you reviewed the KBK track from the Continental Comp, did you sit and nitpick what kind of reverb, guitar or amp I was using, or did you critique the songwriting and performance? In the end these are the things that matter, and I appreciate that you concentrated on that, as we worked with what we had. This is the kind of encouragement that kept me coming back to this board and keeps me striving to be a better musicians.

Why have a board full of of participating humans if every opinion has to be filtered/unoffensive?
People are way too sensitive nowadays, we're not talking personal insults here, it's just gear discussion.
If someone even goes as far as saying the FRV-1 for ex., sucks balls (compared to a unit), it should be nothing offensive/discouraging to a newbie, just exposing him to a higher standard. IMO Big Grin . If that discourages him, than tuff luck, man up and do the best you can with what you have, or save. These are the tools of the trade, from the most experienced folk in the genre, and sometimes these folk are opinionated, isn't that why someone asks a question on a public forum anyway?
And no one bashes the Boss it like that here, most opinions I read on this site do state that it can be usable. I find it usable, but I really strive for more.

This place is very welcoming, one of the most warm and friendly places on the internet, because people here are nice and honest. Let's not corrupt it with PC BS.

When I will record something, I hope to get the most straight opinions out of you guys, please bash me all you can, it will only encourage me to learn more and improve, whether it's my gear, playing of otherwise.

So...I have a DRRI and an FRV-1 can I play surf music? Big Grin

Do you have a guitar of some kind?

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Do I need a guitar? Confused

Please, for the love of god, lock this thread already!!!
Gear talk is great, but this is ridiculous!
The horse is dead! Please stop flogging it.
I would think people would be more interested in playing technique, or the music itself rather than endless bickering over an effect. I tried to start a thread about arpeggios, you know, pertaining to playing actual music -- and very surf relevant. It got almost no response, but the umpteenth multi-page thread about a pedal is still being added to!?!?!?
Let's spend more time making music and less time talking about the shape of the plank of wood we use to make that music.

What's an arpeggio...just kidding. I didn't mean to pi$$ anyone off. Just having some fun. I really don't give a crap what anyone plays as long as they plays......

Just out of curiosity I did some simple (well, I am old) searches to see what I could find.

"FRV" in Forum Topics only: 20 unique topics.
"FRV" in Forum Topics and Forum Posts: 487 posts.
"reverb pedal" in Forum Topics only : 38 unique topics.
"reverb pedal" in Forum Topics and Forum Posts: 1473 posts

Maybe there could/should be a FAQ button on the Home Page that has a hot link to these sorts of search results? And not just for this but all sorts of frequently asked questions.

Noel, I wasn't kidding when I suggested there be a moratoreum on any new threads about reverb pedals or reverb tanks. All the other things I was kidding about...

Ok, that isn't true. I really did mean what I said in regard to people spending less money on being gear hounds and more money on purchasing surf releases and catching surf bands live when they are in your area...hahaha

Is it because you feel the amount of threads on reverb pedals is outweighing the amount of threads about using a delay pedal or two instead of reverb to get the surf sound?

Hahahaha... I think the numbers that Noel posted are the reason I suggest it. Like Victor said, it is a dead horse. There is absolutely no new information ever provided. It is all there for anyone who wants it.

If anyone is unhappy about the recent threads on SG101, I challenge you to step up to start a thread about something you think would be more interesting: a new release, a video, a show report, music theory, whatever. Making a lot of sarcastic posts and useless threads in retaliation for recent thread quality only drags us down further (although I can also see it as blowing off steam). Several people have stepped up and I thank them!

Brian, it was all in good fun...seriously... And give me credit. I did start the 'shorts' thread. That is new and untreaded territory. Smile

I so didn't want to chime in on this thread and keep it going, but in the spirit of contributing to some of the things that I love about SG101, here I am. Like many people, I do NOT feel that we need ANOTHER FRV-1 thread, but I was brought up, and would like to clarify a little...

Noel wrote:

After I bought my Texotica Reverb I sold my FRV-1 to Jamie. I'm really happy I did. He's happy with it and makes it sound fabulous, better than I ever did.

Unexpectedly, I have seller's remorse. Why? I can't really take my tank to my guitar lessons, among other places. Do I regret buying the Texotica? NO! Does it sound so much better than the FRV-1? Yes, and no. I knew that the instant I heard Jamie and Noah. I'm just not that good yet. Later, maybe. Am I going to replace the FRV-1 I sold? Maybe.

I am, indeed happy with the pedal, Noel, but I have to clarify that when you saw us at Instro Summit, I was playing through my tank. Generally, if I can bring my tank, I will. However, the FRV-1 is a GREAT backup should something happen, as well as for situations where I need to travel light or something. In those situations it'll serve me quite well!

FRV-1 works for you? GREAT! Think it sounds awful? GREAT! Follow your bliss and use what works and sounds best for you.

I just see more people complaining about this or that on SG101 and painting with broad strokes. I would just like people to remember that SG101 is a collection of interacting people and not a single entity that can be described as 'intimidating' or 'condescending' or whatever. Some people will be cool, some will not. Avoid the ones that are not, give the other ones plenty benefit of the doubt, and inevitably you will enjoy yourselves!

Well said. I think this is a perfect coda to this whole discussion.
