Sad thing is that it's Ed Cassidy playing drums on that second video. Randy California is spinning in his grave

I don't know...I kinda like it.

Ok, please lock this thread before someone dare post another one of his videos. Seriously... I had nightmares last night and awoke to my eye twitching. The worst part? If another video gets posted, I will not be able to control myself from watching it. I just hate myself that much.

Dude, same here. I do a bad movie night with my friends, and I always show Merrel's videos to them. They get a great kick out of them.

Merrell Fankhauser was apparently warped for life by the experience of discovering that that song Wipe Out people were reporting on the radio not only wasn't his song with the Impacts, but a better song by somebody else (the actual Surfaris). Or maybe he was already a bit warped, who knows. I don't know if he's ever even noticed that the Original Surfaris' cover of the Impacts' own Wipe Out is better too. To notice that he'd have to concede for ten minutes running that the two Wipe Out songs (actual Surfaris' and Impacts') were different. There's a funny sad movie or docudrama or something in all this and MF and the Impacts have bit parts in it as comic relief. The sad thing is that Merrell wrote the part that way himself. That really is him on the Impacts recordings - nobody disputes it - and he and the rest of the band, notably also Wayne Brown the steel player, who wrote the Impact's really good song Steel Pier, were pretty decent in their own way. But Merrell's dedicated his life to making a mockery of that.

Well, on the rare occassion that KBK actually has the facilities to use our Projector, I believe we might have to update our background video to a collage of Merrell Fankhauser footage. These are just too good to be true.

there's a guy on public access here in san diego that is the prog rock equivalent, its just totally awful completely unlistenable garbage, but somehow you cant look away.

He's also completely delusional, on alot of his you tube uploads he has positive comments from dozens of deleted you tube accounts that he probably created, all of them saying how amazing and influential and cute he is

Here's what he was doing in 1967, which may explain a lot...
I wonder if he claims that this is the original Eight Miles High?
I kind of like "Sufin' Susie" too. It's better than a lot of his other songs and when I hear it, I sing the end tag to myself for the rest of the day.

Well, I for one think Merrell's totally legit and a true legend 'cuz it says so right there on our SG101 Homepage so it HAS to be true, right? image

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Hahaha....Brian, I apologize if you have to receive the brunt of this. I could care less about the mans questionable history. The music is just really terrible. Even more, it hardly belongs within this group, vocal or not. Go back and listen to all of the home and hobby demos on the past SG101 compilations. They eclipse this quality of songwriting and recording by miles.

Yeah... his music just hurts music in general.

In a slight defense of Merrell, the Impacts "Eternal Surf" cd from several years ago was fairly decent...although it was a departure from the normal bilge

ha ha! Usually I'm not, as you all have seen. Smile I've even made fun of Merrell before, I admit it.
Maybe it's because I just turned 45, but I've changed my thinking. The Impacts were really good and EARLY pioneers. Merrell was a pioneer on the pedal steel in surf which gave it that Hawaiian feel, which was pretty unique for the SoCal bands in the early 60s. And even though I joked about Fopardokly earlier, they were a pretty big band in the LA psych scene and were just included on the last Nuggets box set. Being in both the surf and psych scenes in LA is pretty impressive and living through the 60s as a musician and then trying to stay creative into the 70s, 80s and up until the present, couldn't have been easy. The pioneers that are still around have dealt with it in different ways. Dick went black leather/ponytail/Born To Be Wild, Paul Johnson seems like he hasn't changed at all, and I get the feeling that Merrell was always a little bit out there, even in the Impacts days. At least he always seems like he is having fun!
PS Jake shouldn't be able to say anything. He hates the Surfaris "Wipe Out" too! Whatever
