It's a beautiful strat, but I have to wonder how many people would actually be able to tell the difference between that $8800 strat & a 57RI that's been played for a few years. BTW Matt, you're in Tempe, I'm in Gilbert. I'm always up for a jam, but I gotta warn ya, I build 'em better than I play 'em! Big Grin

You'll have to come jam with us sometime! We've got a few shows coming up as well, if you're interested. Smile

So over 8 grand for what used to be Fender's run of the mill product, made to the exact specs of their standard non-luxurious guitar from the fifties?
Over 8 grand for what is basically a slaped together guitar. Does that mean that they're admitting that their current standard product isn't as good as the standard from the fifties? Fender had always built their reputation on affordable guitars for working musicians -- the 'common man's guitar. It's sad how they gouge their customers for instruments made the way they should be made in the first place.
I'm sure a lot of dentists and lawyers will love having this guitar vaulted away in display cases.

I'll have to come to some shows. I went to plenty of Del-Vamp shows years ago.

I totally agree, Psychonaut! I think the people that are targeted are the non-playing collectors who have tons of cash to blow.

Bob, I'd love to see you at a Coconauts show! We used to have pretty crazy Del-Vamps shows back in the day. We were banned from some clubs because we were just too wild and the crowds were a bit too rowdy. Good times!

Insofar as 8 grand could ever be justified for a strat, the rationale in this case is the level of detail that went into the reproduction, and the detail is pretty impressive. It's more art than lutherie, if you know what I mean. That said, this obviously is aimed at the "collector" market, hence why they're only making 50 of 'em.

Most of these guitars will never be played, which is kinda sad, really. Like all those Leica cameras sitting in sealed boxes in collectors' vaults... Cry

Exactly my thought! Buddy Holly is bigger than Stratocaster anyway...

Huge Buddy Holly fan here, he is a true original.

My favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPHLkd1zpKI

Buddy Holly and Fender historians would you please rise!
Was not Buddy's strat a 57 or 58?
True to being period correct, should this guitar not have a trem bar and bridge cover?
Aren't these 54 custom wound pickups the same ones used in the DD strat?
If my first question is correct then why isn't it so equipped with 57/62 reissue pickups?
Jake??? Somebody?? Question Hmmm

Buddy's Strat was a '55 and was stolen. I think he had two of them.

By the way, anyone notice in the Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey that everything was just awfully wrong? I saw it a long time ago and I think I remember Buddy playing a Bronco or a Mustang from the 70s at the first gig in the roller rink. From then on I remember him playing a tele or something. Ugh.

By the way, Norman Petty had the Fireballs play behind the "Apartment tapes" and released them. Here's George Tomsco doing a great job on Peggy Sue Got Married:

'57/'62 pickups aren't correct for the era, they are just close enough but cheap enough for Fender to produce. Not something you'd put on a limited run high end guitar. The '54s are a much more accurate thing. No bridge cover because he didn't keep them on and no vibrato arm because he didn't use it.

Quick research...

His first guitar was a '54, which he bought in '55 after he got signed and owned until it was swiped in '57.

Guitar 2 is the Sullivan guitar and the one reproduced in this limited run with the cracked pickup covers. I couldn't find info on the year, and I'm no expert on early Strat(
54-56) cosmetics, so this could be from any of those years. it isn't a '57 though. Swiped in 1958

Guitar 3 was a '58 strat. It had the bridge cover on it shortly as there wasn't time to remove it as he got it replaced just in time.

Guitar 4, never pictured using it, a white strat. year unknown. Bought from Manny's.

I'm a Fireballs fan, but I wish this never happened. I feel the tapes should have been left untouched. Cash grab by Norman Petty. Business was different then...

The Buddy Holly Story got most things wrong, aside from his name. They had him with a white Tele and the one you mention. I can't recall exactly but it was either a Bronco or Duosonic, neither of which existed when he was alive. I think "That Thing You Do" was one of the first movies that made an effort to get the gear period correct.

I remember that Ricky Nelson biopic made by VH1 (I think). The guy portraying the drummer from the Stone Canyon Band was playing a Remo kit in a scene from the early 70s. Remo didn't start making drums til the 80s.

Norman Petty mixed several different versions of most of the apartment tapes, all of which are on various bootleg sets. The only ones that are any good IMO are the ones with the Fireballs. Crying,Waiting, and Hoping sounds as if Buddy would've dug their arrangement. The sad thing is that Buddy wouldn't have ever done the winter tour if Petty hadn't been screwing Buddy out of his money...then he makes a bundle of cash off his final, unfinished work

I'll say. Here is a rare recorded phone conversation between Buddy and Decca records:
