I am seriously bummed about this. The Beastie Boys are the only rap group I've ever really liked, and I didn't just like them, I LOVED them.

RIP MCA Cry

For those of you who can't stand hip-hop, you should check out the instro funk that they did. Pretty amazing stuff. Also, they actually played their own instruments. No sampling.

aww man... what a bummer.

Yes. Their instrumentals are great. I loved watching the arc of their development from hardcore/juvenile rap into what they became. As they grew older they got into more different forms of music and incorporated them very well.
And I think Yauch was the musical genius of the three.
PS I worked for them at X-Large in Portland for about a year in the 90s with Janet from Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag and we had a giant painting of Rat Fink in the store. Wish I had snagged it when it closed.

This really bummed me out today when I heard the news. The Beasties meant so much to me over the years.

As far as their musicianship, yes, Yauch was an amazing musician. Actually, they all were. There was nothing they couldn't do and they did play their own instruments. He'll be missed for sure.

My favorite Adam Yauch song. This one always made me a little melancholy and now even more so.

This is a shame, only 48 too. And you guys are right about them tapping into their true genius in the early 90's with the release of "Check Your Head" when they stared dabbling in acid jazz/blaxploitation/funk instrumentals. I posted this one up on my FB feed yesterday (sorry for the repost), really great stuff:
