Did I mention it's shocking? I had upgraded the trem in my Xaviere offset to a Fender 62 JM tailpiece. I adjusted it every way possible and never liked the feel or response compared to the stock Jap knockoff unit. I never use the trem lock anyway (let's not start that thread again), so I put the old tailpiece back on and....Ahhhh. It's smoother and I've never adjusted it once since I bought the guitar. Maybe I just lucked out and got a good one.
So

I think you got a Japanese vibrato unit, not an AVRI one.
Anyways, only the spring matters I'm pretty sure. Obviously you can make a cheap piece of crap, but other than the spring there shouldn't be a big difference.
There does appear to be a sweet spot for springs, I like it in the middle myself. Too soft and you lose the quick aggressive up and down sound, too stiff and you lose the suppleness of a nice depression at the end of a raked chord.

It's a cheap Jazzmasterish copy sold by Guitar Fetish, the GFS pickup guys. It has a little smaller body and doesn't have the switching. I put a Mighty Mite Strat neck and locking tuners on mine and I love it. The stock necks are a little fat and have hideous headstocks

I'm not sure what the difference is, but the cheapo feels much better to me. The only drawback is that it doesn't have as good of a notch to keep the arm locked in place

Maybe you got a lousy AV unit or as Jake said a CIJ. Does the trem arm snap in or just slip in?

a little of both The Xaviere tailpieces apparently vary a lot due to the cheapness (I'm pretty sure it's the same one used in the Squier Mascis JM) because others have said the arm on their guitar was pretty floppy. I imagine I was just lucky

just to add...the arm on the knockoff trem is more "straight" than a Fender arm, and probably a little shorter. I haven't measured them but it feels slightly shorter (insert joke here)

I ordered a new Fender AVRI trem unit and arm for my Xaviere, and not only it felt much better than what the stock cheapy felt like, it is actually better than the trem on my AVRI Fender Jazzmaster (so the AVRI part on the Xaviere feels smoother and not as sloppy as the one on the AVRI JM). Maybe the replacement parts are better.
BTW, the guy who did my setup said he needed to route the Xaviere cavity a bit to make room for the trem lock. The cheapo piece does not have that, so the cavity is too small in the Xaviere.

I apparently was really lucky with my Xaviere. The trem on mine is very solid and smooth.

i beleieve Allen Collins way back in skynyrd had a teisco tailpiece on his firebird.. i am fortunate to have a lot of intage guitars, but my damaged as is ebay epiphone SG is better than all of them.. it's the little things.
that's great that you found a trem that suits you.
