zzero, From my experience it seems in BOTH your Squier Strats the problem is the strings binding in the "nut". Have you installed thicker gauge strings? Nuts are usually overlooked at the factory, as long as stock strings fit in the nut slot it "passes" inspection.

hey, man of mystery!! hi dude!! i had one of the 2 pup amp in case model silvertones mabe by dano. cool little guitar!! very jangly and did fine for surf. remember, this was the early 60's. hollow-bodied and 2 lipstick pups. great tremolo on the amp in the case. wish i still had that rig, that guitar sounded really cool thru my silverface deluxe reverb!! Rock

Aww god I would kill for an old Dano like that! Lucky man. I got a pretty cool Dano bari in bass VI tuning (in my picture) that has a nice tone but I can only dream of the tone on original Danos.

Oh and on the Surf Strat. Played one and it was okay and I liked it and all, but shortly after I played it I played a midnight wine telecaster and my heart was stolen and this strat guy was converted..

Baha, sorry guys.

Beachbumscott--have never heard of the "Fruda" method of tuning your whammy bar. i think i'll give it a shot. the pre-stretching idea makes sense.
Man of mystery--i understand about the tele. my main axe is a MIM ash body-butterscotch tele. NICE!!!
Thumbs Up

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

Blackheartsfan--the string may be binding in the nut on the surf strat' but i haven't changed string gauges. fine-tuning may help that 'cuz i haven't spent a day setting up that guitar. the VM 70's strat--the bar doesn't even screw into the hole on the bridgeplate--several of the guys out here have tried to get the thing in there---the threads don't seem to want to line up right. may just be a poor machine job. will probably lock the trem anyway. gonna try the Fruda method on the surf strat after i fine tune it.
Thumbs Up

zzero-

Congrats on the Surf Strat. I’m very tempted to get one, too.

I’m far from a competent guitar tech. But for getting things to stay in tune with the trem bar...
First: File the nut slots to widen them a touch and avoid the pinging and binding. I hate it when I hear that ping. Smile I use these files:
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Nuts,_saddles/Special_tools_for:_Nuts_and_saddles/Gauged_Nut_Slotting_Files.html?actn=100101&xst=3&xsr=561
and this instruction/how to:
http://www.frettech.com/nutz/index.html

Second: Lube the nut slots and all string contact points.
I’ll bet that things improve tremendously after that. Good luck.

Beachbumscott--dude-i know you from squiertalk!! how you doing??
JonW--thanks for the advice dude!! i've been playing since '61 or '62 and have done my own setup work since probably '65. but you wouldn't know that--but thanks for the pointers!!!!
in general to all--i'm not a huge fan of wang bars. i rarely use the things--just a matter of personal taste. so wang ON!!!!! SG101!

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

So any chance someone can play some surf songs with the Vintage Modified Surf Stratocaster and post it up here? Preferably through a fender tube amp with a reverb tank! Of course! I'm very interested in this guitar as I don't mind doing some extra setup for cheaper guitars, that's most of the fun of getting a new guitar. But to me the fender video's just sound a little plasticy. I really can't tell how it's going to make the surf sound better. Enlighten me.

Hi guys, a little article about sq surf strat. I'm really waiting for an outsider(I mean: not fender employee or nobodyknows blogger) video/review etc...

and tremolo: does anybody try this: YT VIDEO

original compositions (low-level demo stuff /out of tune, etc) myStuff not my best, but i don't like to be in a musician community without anything to show

Played this thing on Saturday and was not very impressed... felt good but sounded anemic.

Two vids I found of it.

yes, i know them, commercial stuff, but - maybe im too sceptic - i dont believe that its the sound of a 300$ guitar Smile

Lipstick pickups are for Danos. They're too underpowered to put in a Strat IMO

I agree. Had a strat that I had modified with a set of Kent Armstrong lipstick tube pickups and I was very disappointed with the tone. Very weak and thin. Great for doing transparent rhythm parts. That was about it.

I came. I saw. I left.

I have go to a shop and try it myself Smile

Guitar as of last week i set up my surf squier. filed the nut, put on new strings (46's) and tuned up the guitar using the Fruda method. result---the guitar stays in tune well and no string binding in the nut. the tremolo is unblocked and seems to work well. very happy with the setup.
now--it is not a $1500 strat and doesn't perform quite as well as one. but for $300 i'm not complaining. 1/5 the cost of one and works almost as well as a real strat? i'm cheap (and not playing in public anymore) and looking for bang for the buck! lots of bang and not much bucks! happy with her!!
the pick-ups are weak. amp volume knob and gain knob are for that. lipstick pups aren't for everyone so that is a personal sound choice the way i see it. kind of a delicate sound to 'em that is for sure. get yourself a strat with strat pups!
also added WD tuiners to it. don't care for the vintage style tuners.
stays in tune, looks good, sounds good, plays good and is cheap!!!
my kind of guitar!!!! Cheers

love those dano-silvertones by the way----played much surf on one in the early and mid-60's. Thumbs Up

IMHO!

crazy old guy...

I always have the pickup switch set on middle with my Dano DC59. It's the only way to get any balls out of it.

Cool yep--dano's really aren't much for balls--i used a Lafayete fuzz with mine back in the day!! Agree Agree

My girlfriend just bought one of these as her first guitar. It's absolutely gorgeous and it looks to be of much higher quality than my Squier Affinity Strat. From what I can tell, the pickguard, pickups, neck, tuners, and strap buttons are different from my Squier. No word yet on tone; I've only heard it through a solid-state practice amp.
