New Topic

OK so some of you know Im not the biggest garage music fan.
And dont get me wrong I dont think these guys suck totally, but can somebody tell me what the big deal about the Standells was.
seem very mediocre to me.

"Try It." Don't get me wrong, they have a ton of not-amazing stuff, but that song alone is more than enough.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Dicky Dodd ex of Eddie and the Showmen singing, stick twirlin, and beatin the skins. Also, Russ Tamblyn's brother, Larry is on keys. Medication, Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White, Rari are all great with the aforementioned songs. Now, Have You Ever Spent the Night in Jail is horrible.
Personally, for Sunset Strip type garage I prefer the Music Machine, Chocolate Watch Band, and Love's first lp.
The Standells were originally more frat like the Kingsmen and even appeared on the Munsters at that stage. Their manager fabricated them into the Stonesy long hairs you see and hear here. So, they were sort of pre-fab like The Monkees. Hollywood strikes again.

Is there a "best of" I should look for?
or a certain album?

The albums have the nuggets but weak tracks too, I'd go for the Rhino Best of...

Playing "I want to hold your hand". Man, that was baaaaaaad. When I saw that, I was like "WTF??? Where´s the garagey stuff???"

The Music Machine was really cool. "Turn on" is a great album, even though there´s lots of cover filler.

That was the deal back then: singles. Before people got into making full concept albums.

Good point, the albums have lot of fillers, cliche covers.

Jeff, what gave you the idea that people think the Standells are the greatest?

I've always like Dirty Water a lot but was never much into their other stuff. I think the charm of the of one hit wonder garage band is the greatest hit album chalked full of rock and roll covers.

I listened to a lot of radio in those days and DIRTY WATER is the only song of theirs that I can remember. That guitar riff was one that everyone could play like Louie Louie or Wipeout. Anyone seen POP GEAR? A British invasion showcase including the Beatles and a host of imitators. It's easy to see why all of the others have been forgotten. The main stars of the movie are Fender, Gretsch, Burns, Guild, Epiphone, Gibson and many more.

Some people that I used to work with were the Garage geek types, and everythime I would mention surf they would say oh Dick Dodd from the Standelss was from a surf band, and I say yeah I know. then they say the Standels were killer, have you heard them? I say only dirty water, and they say oh man thats a crime you gotta hear more.
I say yeah what ever.... and walk away.

one of the guys from the New Dimensions( cat on a hot foam board) fame went on to be in Three Dog Night, doesnt mean I wanna hear that crap either. Rolling Eyes Wink

I see. I think a book could be written on the "crap" a lot of those guys made after leaving their surf bands of the early 1960s. Have you heard anything by the Shadows of Knight aside from Gloria?

I'm Gonna Make You Mine, Gospel Zone, and Shadows of Knight's version of You Can't Judge A Book By Looking at the Cover come to mind. Great songs.
As far as the Standells go, a lot of it was their look and classic formation (gtr, bs, drms, and Vox organ). They're also prominently featured in the film "Riot on The Sunset Strip", so they had more exposure than others before YouTube came along.
