Okay, so don't lie...how many of us were inspired to become musicians because of seeing The Monkees TV shows, even if in syndication for some of us? R.I.P. Mr. Jones

Fast Cars & Loud Guitars!

*Monkees songs including Pleasant Valley Sunday, Last Train To Clarksville, A Little Bit Me, Valleri, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Words, I'm A Believer, continue to enjoy 'e'arplay on my Tune Player and will continue to do so. Caught the group late 90s's(sans Mike), and Peter solo a couple of times in a small venue and they rocked. Thanks Davy for the Tunes and bringing some fun into our lives.*

The Monkees were one of the last 60s bands that had all original members still alive, until now.

As good as some of the early songs were, their best LPs were Headquarters & Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius & Jones, when they gained creative control. The Missing Links cds, especially Vol 2, have a lot of good stuff not released in the 60s.

They publicly announced after the first season they didn't play on their records & caught hell for it. They had a lot of guts for a "teen pop band".

RIP Davy Jones.

Forever young.

A sad day for all those of us of a certain age.

Los Fantasticos

LOVE THE MONKEES! RIP David Jones. Did we end up living in the same house when we formed the Pilgrims because we all grew up watching the Monkees? Hmmmm
Here's the early version of Valleri as it appeared on the show with Louie Shelton providing the flamenco style leads.

And the rereleased version which appeared later with more horns etc. Hal Blaine kicking ass on drums, of course...

His parents died young. His mom died when he was 14. Davy was another vegetarian who died at an early age.

Also RIP March 3, Ralph McQuarrie, NASA & Star Wars conceptual artist. He created a lot of the designs for the original trilogy.

Ronnie Montrose, guitarist on Edgar Winter's "They only come out at night" LP.

The Aquatudes played & sang "Look Out" in tribute to Davy Jones at Unsteady Freddie's Surf-Rock Shindig last night at Otto's in NYC. We got a nice reaction from many in the crowd who knew what it was ...

Unsteady Freddie.. I think you meant Adam West - not Adam Wade who played the 60s TV Batman.

The Monkees.. not too many people know this but Mike Nesmith probably didn't have to work a day in his life. His mother invented 'whiteout' the white pasty stuff that secretaries of the day used to erase typos. It's still in use somewhat today. Mike had an early 70s solo hit with "Her name was Joanne" The guy had a good set of pipes.

Peter Tork, at one time post Monkees, was a bit bitter and washing dishes for a living. I caught him with his new band called CottonMouth at Max's Kansas City in NYC in the late 70s/early 80s. OK but not great.

Mickey Dolenz caught a D.J. job here circa 2005 in NYC on an oldies station, WCBS-FM.
He was great. To show their appreciation on his anniversary, the WCBS empty suits held a party broadcast at BB Kings and pulled the plug on his broadcast there. They went with "Jack FM" - a synthesized voice and playing any crap that they shuffled together.. no more DJs, no more oldies. It lasted about a year. If I and apparently other listeners want an IPOD shuffle then we don't need WCBS-FM and their compuertized voice. Level heads prevailed and they went back to "newer" oldies - 70s-80s. But Mickey was hosed - pity.

And Davey.. the guy just liked getting married and divorced. he jokingly refrred to an 1980s reunion tour they did as the 'Alimony Tour'
