Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions. Interjecting a dose of sanity into my frequent over-enthusiasm, I've decided to buy a Yamaha PSR E333 with a sustain pedal. It will do everything I need from a keyboard (like first learning to play one) until I outgrow it, which take longer than I'll be laid up. I'll be better able to determine my long term keyboard, software, synthesizer, folley, composing, arranging, recording and mixing requirements after I'm back on guitar full-time.

Am I wrong?

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

here's a list of Hammond B3 emulators I gathered:
http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/b4-ii - Requires Kontakt software (free player available).
http://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=24 - Great company, also have a very convincing spring reverb.
http://masterhammond.syntheway.net/
http://www.tronsonic.com/#/organatron-m100/4558211425
http://www.hollowsun.com/HS2/products/novachord
http://www.martinic.com/combov - free one

You can route them through a DAW (again, I recommend Reaper) to an amp simulation (many good free ones to have), and whatnot. Lots of fun, and learning on the way.

Great. Thanks!

You're welcome Smile
BTW I have personally played only with the first two on that list and they are awesome. The others look (sound actually) good too.
I'd suggest you start with free software all around, then you'll have a better idea where you wanna take this.
HERE's a nice resource.

VB3, cheap and excellent. Also includes Vox Continental and Farfisa sounds, which are more surf (perhaps).

Los Fantasticos

I'm not sure the Yamaha PSR E333 is compatible with this. BUT I don't need it to be. If I stay with keyboards as a musical instrument next, and not just as a way keep learning while I'm incapacitated this year, I can step up.

Any keyboard is compatible, as long as it has USB or MIDI. Your PSR sure does. It probably has a driver you need to install, where you can tweak settings, presets etc. and also route the MIDI channels to whatever software you're using, meaning - what you play on whatever setting/preset/range on your keyboard is assigned a channel, you assign the synth software to the same channel and that's it.
Usually, with modern software the defaults are just right, without needeing to tweak anything. Once you get the hang of the basic principles, the rest is easy.

Ariel, that is great news. This is going to be fun. As I understand it, when I get a real handle on reading music and the rest, it will be a lot easier to learn guitar, and playing things on it will make a lot more sense. Plus, writing music will be a lot easier too. Maybe I'll even come up with something the internet surf band can work on.

I went into my music store today to confirm the order for the Yamaha PSR E333 and accessories like the sustain pedal. Someone was there buying an identical sustain pedal and he heard me talk about my surgery. He's had the same thing done several years ago. His shoulder is perfect now. That's the good news.

The less good news is his description of what it felt like when he awoke the next morning. And he said it took a lot of PT for a long time to get to 100 percent. That's okay. My shoulder is getting worse and worse every day. I can't use my left arm to drive for more than a few minutes, so I don't really have a choice.

So the keyboard and accessories are ordered and I bought my first piano music books and instructional DVD.

Everyone don't laugh or groan all at once, but I think I can learn the organ part for The Ventures' Red River Rock pretty quickly. Any surfier and just as easy ideas for the first few months?

Listen to Johnny

That's great. A lot less sanitized than The Ventures version, but almost exactly the same.

It's a start. Any other ideas for a one-handed beginning keyboardist?

Twisted Evil > Angel

That's ... I said one-handed beginning keyboardist. And besides, I could NEVER grin like that.

... actually very interesting. I think I better stick to something simpler for a while.

I've added Out of Limits and Telstar to Red River Rock as my starter list. All three have essentially right-handed organ parts that don't seem too difficult to learn. Does anyone have something to recommend that's not almost as old as I am?

I absolutely LOATHE this band. As a musician, if you lived here in Phoenix, you'd probably feel the same way.

Here Noel, you don't have to lift the organ around, but this is good for one hand. Smile

Yeah, I don't like them either actually. Their first album was alright but really I just really like that song. The rest of their songs are pretty much trite nostalgic bullshit.

The organ in this is just about right for me. Big Grin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WpRnjxuBys Cool song too.
