If you fancy a little bit of spaghetti-western, you've got to check out
The Hellbenders - Today we kill, tomorrow we die. The instrumental parts on that album is amazing.

The new album from Lost Acapulco is also a great record.

But my personal favourite must be The Madeira - Carpe Noctem (El Flaco still gives me the chills!) That album is one of the main reasons I started to play surf myself, and if you haven't heard it, you've got to check it out Smile

"I don't know anything about an augmented ninth, or a 13th chord, and I don't give a crap. All I know is how to make my guitar scream with pain or pleasure." Dick Dale

Well, thank you very much, Golden!! We greatly appreciate it.

BTW, you might be pleased to know that El Flaco was originally done by Reider & the Quintones, your neighbors from Sweden! (See more about them here.)

Thanks a lot for the link. I did not know that, so thank you for the enlightenment. And concerning the "Carpe Noctem" album, I'm the one who's grateful. After all, The Madeira opened my eyes (and ears) for the wet dripping reverb sounds of surf Smile

As far as "newer" bands go, check out:

The Fathoms
The Nebulas

Good stuff for sure.

I want to hear Caravan with a drum solo.

I know I'll probably get laughed at for this because
a) this is my fist post to SG101 and
b) recommending this Starbucks comp Shock

Released in 2007 and like all disposable Starbucks cds a limited release. But its also a Rhino release and I think they did an overall good job with the selection, liner notes and the whole package. Liked it so much I bought two copies Big Grin

Nothing wrong with those selections!

i never go to starbucks but i did stop in to buy that compilation, even though i had most of the tunes on other cd's. i was traveling at the time in someone else's car and we needed some surf.

Reading this thread brought a couple of questions to mind. Can anyone suggest a comprehensive list of bands doing reverb drenched high energy Spaghetti Western and or Spy music?? ( No Morricone or original soundtrack bands) Laughing Looking for modern bands doing this style.

I am not obsolete, I am RETRO.... Cool

At least one band comes to mind regarding the Spaghetti Western style, The Five Outsiders. Bought their cd last year and have played it numerous times over. Haven't heard any updates on them as to whether they're still together and playing or not, but nonetheless a great cd.

-Damon.

+1 on 5 outsiders - great stuff! Hi energy, original arrangements and great use of sax imho.

Danny Snyder

Latest project - Now That's What I Call SURF
_
"With great reverb comes great responsibility" - Uncle Leo

I'm back playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta

Thanks for the point at The Five Outsiders. Any ideas were I can order it in online as I cant seem to find it.....Also looking for Los Cartablanca on disc as well......lol
Thanks! Cool

I bought it here Five Outsiders-On The Run Cd @ Interpunk

-Damon.

And as for Spy style music, I'm not overly familiar with many bands who do that solely (I know many will venture into that area for a song or two). But one that definitely is keeping with the Spy side of surf would be Spy-Fi
Be worth checking em out for sure.

There are a few who do, but to be honest none of them made much of an impression on me. For full albums, the best one is the Secret Agent S.O.U.N.D.S. comp.

From the not-100%-surf category, The Ventures' Batman Theme album is killer and the Clee-Shays collection is pretty good, too.

There's a boatload of killer spy-themed songs from surf bands, but in almost every case the band only did one or two songs in that vein.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I agree on the Five Outsiders. DWM Music has it:

These 3 bands:

The TomorrowMen
The Space Cossacks
Los Straitjackets

These are the top 3 on my list.
Though I will probably never play at the level they all play at, whenever I listen to any of them, I just gotta pull the Strat down off the wall. I've learned tons about playing surf music just by listening to these groups.

Fin Doctors
Crashmatics
