I said it to Nokie Edwards a few weeks ago and Its worth repeating here. Even though I'm a young guy, I'm living in a great time where I can still see the great artists that made some of the most important music in my life.

With that being said, The Beach Boys certainly have an important place to me I would just hope that they don't charge top dollar for a show because lord knows I dont have it. I know that will be the case, so ill have to settle for chilling at home and listen to the records.

Hey Matt, in another post you suggested the Beach Boys
didn’t play on their recordings which is incorrect.
That leads me to believe that you don't really know
much about the band and you are not a fan that’s likely
to go see them anyway. What's your burning desire to
chime in on this thread?

Check out her site as she's damned good. Also, Glen Campbell played on a lot of Beach Boys' albums.

Then, check out http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Hal_Blaine.html

How much don't I know about the Beach Boys?

Matt, I would hope that you were smarter than to take things at face value on the web. One of the biggest myths is that the Beach Boys didn't play on their stuff. The session cats started creeping in in the mid-sixties close to Pet Sounds, but on their early hits it was the boys playing on their own stuff. After the Pet Sounds era they went back to playing in the studio again.

Apologies Brian. When someone challenges me about something, I just had to respond. I absolutely love the Beach Boys and couldn't understand how someone didn't know about the great musicians behind their music like Carol Kaye.

I agree. It's funny how people just love to jab at the Beach Boys. Again, a big myth is that they didn't play on their stuff. Do some research and you'll find the truth.

Just very hard to please musically and easily discontented!

i've seen different versions of the beach boys in the 70's, 80's, 90's, a total of five times. every show was great. will i see this? who knows. i'm excited to hear that david marks is playing with them though, especially after reading the lost beach boy book.

That would be the only reason I'd entertain going. Smile

An excellent point, actually. Nokie wasn't exactly like hearing him in '65 but we should consider ourselves lucky to see these legends at all.

Some friendly suggestions (sincerely) to those who want to know more about what the Beach Boys did and didn't do. Should blow some myths out of the water like the myth that they didn't play on all of their records. Three quite excellent books. Enjoy...

exactly. no 'should have but didn't' regrets in the future after some of these people cease to walk the planet.

Well put, Jake. I am a big fan of what the Beach Boys did ... not so much as to what they are currently doing... sort of like listening to the current version of The Who...

I wonder? Wnen I was in NYC every day and night for 6 months I DIDN'T go see Les Paul at the Iridium while I had the chance. Then he died. I also missed seeing Hubert Sumlin last year when I had the chance. I'll almost certainly never see Eddie Bertrand play.

That's why I went to see Dick Dale recently. I'll regret it if I don't see Glen Campbell this time around; there won't be another opportunity. Same with the Beach Boys. If I get to see them this time, I'll enjoy them as long as I don't need them to sound like they did in 1963.

Good points, Noel. The difference with Les and Eddie is that they didn't (don't) sing and could (can) still play incredibly well.

I have some of the very earliest records Roy Rogers ever made (as Leonard Slye in The Sons of the Pioneers) and the first film he starred in as Roy Rogers (Under Western Stars, 1938). I have about half of his films and television shows and a complete collection of every song from his films with Dale Evans. I also have the very last appearence he ever made on stage. Sure he got old and was ill a lot. Towards the end he didn't play guitar any more and lost most of his voice; he even forgot some lyrics to a song he wrote. I couldn't care less. The people in the audience that last performance saw a living national treasure if there is such a thing, and I'd have been there if I could even though there was such strong sense of sadness along with the joy. Watching that farewell concert reminds me of everything he meant to me and tens of millions of other kids back when he was (and we were) young.

This is why, even though their vocals may far from what they were, I'll go see the Beach Boys if I can. Even if I don't like Pet Sounds or what came afterwards. Besides, my daughter, who loves me to sing Little Surfer Girl to her, would be thrilled beyond words.

In case some of us here are too young to remember Roy, I added this video.

Noel, that's awesome that you got to see Roy. I'm like that with George Tomsco and the Fireballs. It just so happens that I've seen the Beach Boys before and wasn't happy with what I saw. I don't knock anyone who wants to go see them or not. It's their choice and I'm happy to see so many people excited about it.

We've all got different opinions about it, but it comes down to an individual's choice. Whatever their reasons for going/not going is up to them. Some of us aren't excited even though we're big fans. I'm just really glad some people can still get excited over them. I don't look down on anyone for that for sure!
