Permalink The Telecaster ~ Surf Guitar?

Last year I took a class called "intro to Country string bending" where we learned all that fancy stuff to make make your guitar sound as close to a slide steel as you can and the guy teaching the class had one of those "B bender Tele's like that sparkle one.
He could tear that thing up!

That's a good question and I think it's up to the
individual. I answered the question for my own tastes,
as I use the tremelo quite a bit, and I posted video of
how a Telecaster sounds when used for Shadows' style
instrumentals. Any guitar could be a surf guitar if
that's the type of music you wish to create.
I personally wouldn't use a telecaster unless it had a
tremelo. I know quite a few people who don't even use
the bar. I've also seen Deke play surf with a Gibson
ES-335. Many people use Mosrites, which I don't
consider a surf guitar. However, if they like it, I
say use it. Didn't you use a Telecaster and a PRS for
Squid Vicious?

Yes! I still play that same combination of guitars in the Nematoads, though the PRS has become the dominant guitar. I was playing Telecasters long before I got into surf. It's a great, versatile guitar. Sometimes in the studio, I'll use the PRS for lead and Tele for rhythm. That mix works well for me.

That's all that matters, IMO. Smile

Where did you take that class?

WELL, i just traded mine for a prs with p-90 single

simple, efficient and not a whole lot of damn little
screws falling out and needing adjustments. a
little
adjustments to the vox 50 watter and hell--surf
music
comes out!!! well....

so the strat and tube nazis will

talk
about me. not pure surf. no, i'm a blueser and a

half-cajun crazy man is gonna surf naked on the
bayou
while playing howling wolf and muddy waters.

SURF DADDY!!! Where is he now?

The class was at Swallowhill music school down toward Hampden and Broadway
I've taken quite a few group classes there.

No. They don't sound right. Twang does not make a

guitar. A telecaster just doesn't have the feel of
the
surf guitar I am used to.

Turns out I was wrong! Only the quality of the music
coming out of guitars matters.

If anyone has a Telecaster and wants to put an Bigsby on it, check out the Vibramate system.

Works great:)

Perhaps this Telecaster would have some appeal to surf musicians?

The guitar and photo belong to Old Tele Man, who used to post on the FDP but is now elsewhere on the internet.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

That's interesting. I wonder how well the Jazz/Jag trem does with that kind of bridge?

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

If a Tele is good enough for the king of the surf guitar's band, then I guess that ends this discussion!

Nice!

One of the many things I love about this site...no matter what the topic at hand, our motivated and resourceful members invariably come up with some excellent, entertaining and often obscure but still bitchin' stuff. In this case, the Pat on the Back has to go to Matt..great find!

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

Well, this one comes pretty damn close!

yeah, the painted headstock just makes it that much worse..
I have 2 teles, one ash thinline and a burst Squier.
I like them both and think they do just fine for surf but the sound is a bit different but what do I know, I play Mustangs most of the time.

You know well enough that the Mustang is a hell of a guitar! I think that's another under-rated guitar, yet because of that they're still affordable!

I remember driving 2 hours to the east coast music mall when I was a teen to buy a jagstang.
God I hated that guitar..
it got smashed when fighting with the ex but I never missed it.
my Mustangs on the other hand, well no girl is worth them Smile

jonny_flatbottle wrote:

Oh no, no! No No No That's terrible! You have my deepest sympathy. No guitar deserves to be smashed, not even a Jagstang. Well, maybe one of those BC Rich jobbies, but then, surely guys who own them don't have a girlfriend/wife?

I've had my share of bitter fighting with the ex but I'm glad it never came to that. Nothing got broken in the process, except maybe my idealism and my ego.

This rig really delivers deep twang for me...I have added a white tolex/wheat grill reverb unit to it.
