Cuz, I can't help but notice in recent sets leading up to the Reverb Hour having some choice early Reggae and Dub cuts. Is there a show going @ KFJC that focuses on these bands & scenes akin to your Reverb Hour?

If not, perhaps you could keep this trend going in your set. A few suggestions/requests - Culture, Burning Spear, Lone Ranger, Jackie Mittoo, Most any of that Studio One stuff really... Wink

Ah, Good tip. May just have to give that a listen. Thanks Bob!

I play every genre in the first two hours of my show. That's how KFJC shows that are not specialty shows (such as the Reverb Hour) mostly work, subject to the taste and interest of the DJ. The only thing you can count on is that you probably won't hear what we play anywhere else.

KFJC has an outstanding reggae library - and last night it seemed to work well with the soul tracks I had just sampled!

Bob's right - Spliff Skankin's Jah's Music is on from 3-7pm every Sunday and is a specialty reggae show. He's been on for a long time, maybe 30 years. He also has one of the great voices in radio!

More surf music coming up this week on KFJC:

Tuesday 6-7pm - From the Vault - re-broadcast of a 2003 set from the Lava Rats - DJ Hacker's Muse

Saturday 3-4pm - Live broadcast from Streetlight Records in San Jose - DJ Cousin Mary spinning surf music

About 10 minutes into this aircheck is tonight's "From the Vault" that replayed a live 2003 set from the Lava Rats. I listened to the FM broadcast at 6pm - sounded great!

Today in San Jose at Streetlight Records (980 S. Bascom) - live broadcast and "penny pitch" fundraiser. Bring your change to throw into the KFJC bucket, or just come to hang out. DJs will spin from 1-6pm, I'll be playing surf music from 3-4pm.

Please stop by and say hello if you are in the area.

Cousin Mary

At remotes, we don't have a computer for playlists. Here is (more or less in order) who I played. I started by emphasizing local bands:
Aquamarines
Deadlies
Mach IV
Tomorrowmen
Reefriders
Neptunes
Del Mars
Beachkrieg
Meshugga Beach Party
Deadbeats
Pollo del Mar
Tequila Worms
Slacktone
Insect Surfers
Jon & the Nightriders
Surf Coasters
Bradipos IV
El Ray

Busy day - went back to the station for my regular 6-9pm shift!

Thanks Mary for playing "Feeding Frenzy" by Voodoo Court on your 9/24 show. The disc is called The Surf's Nor for Pussies as you mentioned, although apparently my house is getting the same. We went from a three to a one cat household since my daughter took two to live with her in LA.

Get Wet/Apache- the second worst version of that chestnut, right after the "Tonto, Jump on it" version. The rest of the show was pretty damn tasty! Thanks Mary.

Mary.

You can relax, Ferenc - KFJC's library does not have the "Tonto, Jump on it" version. Smile

I'm shocked... Shocked! I tell you, that you don't like the Sugar Hill Gang's version of Apache. That's my absolute favorite version:

Just read in the NY Times that Sylvia (of Mickey and Sylvia) and more importantly the producer of the Sugar Hill Gang just passed away. Might have to play their version of Apache after all....

Please note that KFJC's fundraiser has begun. We try to keep the impact on programming low so have no fear. Smile One thank-you gift is a CD/DVD from the KFJC Battle of the Surf Bands held in May, given for a minimum donation of $45. I think it's really good, with contributions from all 16 bands who were there! Here's the link to check out this and other gifts: http://www.kfjc.org/donate/index.php

(PS - hope that Ferenc likes the version of Apache that I played this week!)
