whoa bud...
what is so predictable? Post says new to surf music any suggestions.
with the exception of FrankieStein and the ghouls and Ventures ... I think anyone listening to these for the first time would dig this group of records. I know I did. These are the records that really pulled me into playing surf music. Its what I like. I have 100s of records...but I always come back to my roots.(core favorites)

I question the taste of anyone who wouldn't also like that Ventures LP.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

One particular comp I've found to be an excellent introduction to "What is surf?" is Del-Fi's Wild Surf. It contains 24 stellar first-wave tracks by The Lively Ones, The Centurions, Dave Myers & The Surftones, The Sentinals, The Impacts, The Surfmen, The Surfaris, The Pharos and The Gonzos. It's really difficult to believe that anyone could listen to this entire album and not "get it," at least at an introductory level.

Cowabunga Man, I've got some old 45's that I bought in the early 60's.
My son Jeff grew up listening to some of them. I think he likes Surf music.

JonPaul, that's indeed a great comp, but I think there's one out there even better, the one that got me into surf music pretty seriously back in '91. "Guitar Player Magazine Presents: Legends of Guitar - Surf, Vol. 1". For my money, this remains THEE best first wave comp to this very day, though it's been out of print for a long time. It was lovingly compiled by John Blair who also provided in-depth liner notes. And it was released by Rhino, who did their usual great job with everything else. Check out this selection of songs, 18 in total:

Dick Dale – A Run For Life
The Lively Ones – Surf Rider
The Chantays – Beyond
The Sentinals – Latin'ia
The Astronauts – Baja
Eddie & The Showmen – Squad Car
The Challengers – Tidal Wave
PJ & The Galaxies – Tally Ho!
The Ventures – Diamond Head
Johnny Fortune – Soul Surfer
The Original Surfaris – Bombora
Jim Messina & His Jesters – The Jester
The Avantis – Gypsy Surfer
Bobby Fuller & The Fanatics – Our Favorite Martian
The Tornadoes – Bustin' Surfboards
The Surfaris – Point Panic
The Fender IV– Mar Gaya
The Crossfires – Fiberglass Jungle

The only surf releases I had before I got this CD was a Challengers best-of and some Beach Boys. Hearing all the above tracks was, well, pretty eye-opening! In fact, I've been revisiting this comp the last couple of days, and it still sounds as great as it did back when I first got it. It just works!
