Here are the Surfaris doing Wipeout. For a song that over rated, they crowd sure seems to like it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEvXuHKg1TE&mode=related&search=

The "crowd" also loves Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and many other awful celebrities.

Say what you will about WipeOut, but just how many times in rock history has the SAME recording of the SAME song ascended into the TOP TEN, TWICE, 3 years apart from each occurence?

-Bruce D

While it is impressive that it charted at number one once that just cannot justify it not being overrated. Popularity does not always equal quality. Just look at pop music.

I think in society we tend to hate something more if it is popular even if we only dislike it a little bit. The Eagles for example. I hate the Eagles. They did write some good songs though, which is unfortunate.

Thinking about Wipe Out is actually giving me a headache at this moment.

P.S. Those who knock "Pipeline," "Mr. Moto," "Wipeout," etc., may you get severe arthritis and may your amps burn like the fires of hell!

Yeah! What he said. imageimageimage Praise unto the founding fathers of surf!!!! (But I could do without the sax in the old classics).

I know what you mean, but it is part of the deal. I was listening to the Surfaris the other day and thought to myself that their sax is some of the best-not too intrusive and when it is, it sounds great. Besides the genius Ron Wilson on drums, Jim Pash was probably the best "player" of his instrument in the group.

Sax and vocals were hard for me to swallow when I first started getting into surf. I've softened on them both, but I actually like the sax on the 1st wave stuff now if it is done well. Like Ted said, it is part of the deal.

It is kind of interesting about the evolution of surf and the sax. The sax didn't fare too well. I can think of The Halibuts, The Fathoms, and The Eliminators who carried it forward. All 3 of those used the sax well, I think. John & The Nightriders did some songs with a guest sax too. Any other post 1st wave bands with a sax?

If I beleive correctly, Bill from the Eliminators did the sax parts on the 90's Jon and the Niteriders songs.

The Neptunes new sax player is REALLY good! A monster musician, and seems to have a very good feel for surf music, though I seem to remember he's pretty new to it...

I just uploaded my cover of CONTACT by the Pyramids, complete with sax section. This is an overlooked "classic" in my opinion. I never really liked the way sax was used in classic surf but I am beginning to love what the power that horns can add. I'd appreciate any comments. I also have a pretty cool version of Catharsis by the Kilaueas with a whacky sax part, and I have Ralf Kilauea's blessing on this one.

I can forgive Jim Pash since he was such a great guitar player too Wink

Jim Pash's playing on "Similau" is the most compelling pro-sax-in-surf argument I can think of.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Though not exactly the same recording, the Ventures came close.

this is a very interesting thread. I'd have to agree with DD "lets go trippin" although I'm sure it was great live at the time? When I got into surf music first and I started hearing/learning more, I couldn't wait to hear lets go trippin as every piece of surf music trivia i could get my hands on said that it was the first surf single etc etc. Man was I disappointed.......surfer joe- I like the barracudas version and pipeline - i agree with the post above re the head phones and vinyl it almost sounds wet!!! (Agent Orange version is brilliant also)

Thanks Ivan, It has been so cool having a sax... and Jim actually surfs. Takes off for days at a time to the coast... He is getting the surf sound really fast, he comes from a jazz background. He calls playing surf horn "Sqwaks and Squeeks" But it sounds good to me.

He makes his own instruments, and for $10K you can have one too!

Hey guys, New member posting here...

Am I the only person who can't stomach "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen... I swear it's the most annoying freakin' thing ever recorded. And if that's a Surf tune then so is Hanky Panky by Tommy James (yikes!)!

Just IMHO... As far as the other songs mentioned...

Let's Go Tripping - I agree, not really a pure Surf tune - more like a forerunner - though it is a pretty wild guitar track for 1962 - if only for how loud it is in Dick Dale's little 3 track mix.. and it sounds like a party!

Penetration - I still like it - though I'm not fond of the modern Heavy metal versions (like Dick's "duet" with Stevie, etc)

Mr. Moto - C'mon... that tune is way cool - I mean the Belairs version with all those stops and starts and variations in tone... Deep bends on those wet chords - I like it.

Stompin Surfboards - Bit of a snooze but that seems to be what they were going for... sort of like Penetration in overall mood - a tune to listen to after you've been up all night and you're watching the sunrise with a hangover - and a chick whose name you can't quite remember.

I like most of the Ventures tunes - though some of the covers of their songs were better Surf tunes - (i.e The Lively Ones version of Surf Rider etc) But the Ventures never considered themselves a pure Surf Band - they were really like a Guitar Instruction band.. and you gotta hand it to them for that - they really helped the electric guitar take over the world. I just recently rediscovered them and now I'm starting my own Surf Band - so there ya go.

That's what brought me here... - JC

Hey JC welcome aboard, glad to have you here. I joined once I decided to form a surf band, now I'm in 2 and credit this place with almost all I've learned. Why don't you put a post up about yourself in this thread?

tequila was pretty overrated.

Tequila pre-dated surf...I think that was a hit in 1958 or something.
