Permalink Ever kick your reverb tank ?

While looking thru the closeout section at Musiciansfriend today, I came across the Danelectro Spring King reverb stomp box.

One of it's features was the ability simulate kicking a real reverb tank
This gets some sort of "explosive" sound out of it.

This seems like a rather alarming form of musical expression that would have limited appeal.

Anybody actually DO this ?

I think this song starts with the Spring King "kick/crash".

Doesn't give the same effect that kicking a real tank gives. More controlled, which isn't a bad thing.

I'm not sure, I've never used one of these units.

Have you actually listened to surf music? Laughing

Edit: I'm tweaking you, but there are plenty of examples of the reverb crash appearing in surf songs over the years.

Huh.......

I suppose I've heard the sound of a reverb tank being kicked, but I never figured it was the result of someone actually walking over and KICKING their $600 reverb tank. Thought it was some studio trick.

Go figure......

You don't even have to kick it sometimes. Just set it on a shaky stage and jump up and down a couple of times for the same effect.
One of the reasons Dick Dale hangs his from the rafters. Of course the other reason is for show.

Be careful following the masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent...........................

Shall we start a list of song?

  1. Surf Coaster's "Tsunami Struck" sounds like Shigeo is vigorously shaking his tank.

And yes, this can be a desirable effect, much like feedback. (Consider how players like Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townshend purposely integrated "alarming" noises into their style.)

Not to mention the fun results of hitting a tank good and hard with a note well into the bass range. If you listen to Jack Nitzsche's album "The Lonely Surfer" you can hear a Bass VI torturing the springs in a Fender tube reverb. It sounds like ths springs are about to jump out of the can and make a break for it. Smile Lordy but that sounds kewl!

Why would you not kick your reverb? BigTikiDude calls it "Spank The Tank"

What's gonna break? Tubes, electronics, springs... all replaceable.

We can add several more songs, cause just about every Phantomatics song has a reverb crash at some point in the song.

Chronosurf by the Tomorrowmen has 2 very stragegic crashes in the song. I'd love to see how Danny gets those in on time when playing live.

I just kick it. You don't have to hit it hard. I think most surf bands' guitarists kick the tank sometimes during the set. I'll only refrain if I'm borrowing someone else's.

There are people who think it is cute to kick somebody else's tank. NEVER kick sombody else's tank.

Can I kick it? (yes, you can!) Smile

Before I moved out of Real Player I used to have a playlist of songs with tank kicks. I'll have to rebuild it.

The Ghastly Ones have a few songs with reverb crashes. Ghastly Stomp begins and ends with one...I know there's one or two others at least.
