Permalink FUZZY AND WILD... here comes the FUZZ!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Next

Abraham posted on the Davie Allan thread, "I really wanna hear some more fuzz. Is there any other bands that I should know about"?...

Being a big fan of the fuzz I thought this question deserved it's own thread. As you all know, Davie Allan is widely regarded as the "King of Fuzz", but the Ventures and others recorded some really great fuzz tunes as well. IMO a collection of Ventures fuzz tunes would make a really great CD comp!!! Check 'em out...

FUZZY AND WILD
WILD AND WOOLY
WILD CHILD (Fuzz Bass)
THE CREEPER
THE SWINGING CREEPER
PEACH FUZZ
2000 Bee (Part 1 & 2)
BIRD SWINGERS

Also, HAL BLAINE recorded an all fuzz guitar album in 1963 (that's damn early for fuzz!) it's called "Deuces, T's, Roadsters and Drums" and IMO it's a must have! For garage fuzz the must have album is "Turn On" by the Music Machine. And if you want more garage fuzz... The Seeds is where it's at. As far as new bands, The Born Losers from Spain really nail it!

Feel free to chime in with your favorite fuzz tunes!

Can't believe I forgot that one in the Davie Allan thread. For shame, me.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I know you know this Warren but that Angel Dust album was a musical cornerstone for me when I picked it up back in 1988. Includes The Hogs, (aka The Chocolate Watchband) version of Blues Theme which is pretty awesome.

Will, Garrett will be happy to know that's your favorite pedal.

I talked to him at the convention about it. I've always loved the Ghastly's tone. Now if I could just get good enough to play the damned thing!!!!

I want to add the clip of The Boardwalkers doing Surfari and Angry Breed to this thread just cause it's such an awesome use of fuzz. Brian posted this clip on the main page and rightfully so. Dan plays the second verse of Surfari with a fuzz pedal and it sounds awesome. His fuzz tone on Davie Allan's Angry Breed is quite impressive as well...

And with all due respect to Davie Allan, this Ventures tune is neck and neck with "Blues Theme" as the greatest use of fuzz IMO. The Creeper...

A definite must have when it comes to instrumental fuzz surf is The Glaciers' GREAT 1964 From Sea To Ski album.

Thanks for the tip on The Glaciers LP, Klas! I knew I could count on you to dig up some obscure stuff. Gonna have to find a copy of that one! Even the cover pic looks amazing! How did I miss this one all these years?

It's actually not that obscure and was released by big label Mercury Records. I only paid something like $30 + shipping for a nice copy on eBay some years ago. I'm sure you'll be blown away by the over the top early fuzz sounds that are often combined with quite heavy reverb, featuring both effects at the same time for the lead guitar! All instro studio group album including two Hazlewood penned and retitled Astronauts songs ("El Aguila" and "The Hearse"). I totally agree on the great looking cover art! And I guess you'll be pleased to hear it's Mr. Blaine behind the drums!

There's a near mint copy on eBay right now for a $40 buy it now price:

are we talking Just vintage here, or 80's and 90's and modern bands too?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I don't have all of his stuff,
but what about:
Simon Jones,
Space Agency, and
the 3rd other project hes done.
forgetting the name,
Simon, Warren?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Vibrasonic? The Space Agency albums have more fuzz on them - all three of which are highly recommended.

I think Abe's original post in the Davie Allan thread that caused this new thread was asking for mostly older stuff.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

More great Ventures fuzz: Love Potion #9 and So Fine.

2012-2013: FILTHY POLAROIDS

Well Klas, based on your recommendation I just picked up the near mint copy on ebay! This LP does sound right up my alley. I'm a big fan of just about anything from the 60's with Blaine on drums. Must have! Love those "studio" groups. It's very cool to come across something like this that surprisingly I've never seen or heard of before. You're the man!

As you know Jeff, I really dig the older stuff but feel free to throw in some new stuff. Like I mentioned, The Born Losers from Spain are a band from now that have a great Fuzz sound. Born Losers MySpace...

I used to have a Univox Super Fuzz. Bought it when I was 18 & played it on my first band's demo in 1986. It was so nasty I used to call it the vomit pedal. At some point it broke & was collecting dust, so I ended up giving it away.

I bought a Vox Distortion Booster in 1965. It was a chrome box that plugged directly into the amp and had to be turned off and on by hand. With my Esquire, it nailed the Jeff Beck era Yardbirds. They made a matching treble booster as well.

Cool, that makes me happy as I'm sure you'll dig it the most! I played my copy last night and was reminded it actually has 3 retitled Astronauts/Al Casey covers, the third being "Surf's You Right".
