A 2nd big thanks bigtikidude for the Tikiyaki links, they are just a fantastic band. Definately my kind of stuff. I'll be getting their CDs for sure.

Just to throw another wrench into things... I was listening to a trashed vinyl copy of $1,000,000 Worth of Twang vol. 2 today (scored it for a quarter, what a deal!) and if you take exotica, Duane & Lee & the gang, maybe Santo & Johnny, and bits of other stuff to use as mortar... well you might get surf.

Blanko Dave/The Mingo Creek Balladeers - acoustic folk rock, pop, blues, & originals
The Thrifty Discount DJs - 98% Vinyl, 100% Retro
The National Bird - original folk rock with gronky machinations and electric guitar explosions

I'm a big fan of the genre and agree that there are similarities even though exotica mainly attracted adults while surf music obviously was more for teenagers.

Uh-huh.
What could be more mainstream adult than, say, Bali Hai from South Pacific.
Also, Surf was no doubt easier for teens to play, with the resources they had.

there have been surf bands that have done covers of Bali Hai.

BTW, has anybody mentioned "The Exotic Sounds of the Cocktail Preachers" on this thread? If not, I am. If so, well EXCUUUUUSE ME!

Where's the arrow though the head emoticon when you need it?

and also needed to be announced here.
though not really Exotica or surf.
but truly in between the 2.

Oh, man, 'am and have long been an exotica fan, to way back when as a child when the parents used to play Ethel Smith on B-3 & Leslie on the Hi-Fi and Martin Denny Orchestra.

On a "serious" playing evening, music from the fingerboards will often drift from surf to exotica to jazz to lounge and maybe a bit of world. Wherever the hands and mind wants to go.

In this mind, exotica and surf and jazz and lounge are all musical relatives from the same gene pool.

And one step further, in this opinion the Mosrite and Jazzmaster and Strat are superb tools for all those musical forms.
