The Haunting with Julie Harris is a hard one to top. They never even show a ghost, still works for me.

I recall one of my babysitters watching that one & I asked her to change the channel. She refused, the sadist.

the scariest ones are the ones that leave the most up to your own imagination and don't cop out showing all the gore.

We Deadbeats just saw that movie Paranormal Activity that's all abuzz right now. That got us all pretty freaked out at the end. I had heebie jeebies all over, had some trouble getting to sleep in my creeky house. Laughing

This one hasn't even been released yet (yay for downloading!), but I also recently saw the movie Antichrist. I have never, EVER squirmed so much during a movie, not even close. If anyone wants to see the most disturbing piece of film in a long time, I highly recommend it. It's a movie that's hard to describe in only a few words, but I think the term "complete draining mindf*ck" comes pretty close. Laughing

Ben, I saw the preview for Antichrist and it does look pretty disturbing (aka good.) Willem Dafoe seems perfect for that role.

Lars Von Trier directed, that should be fun. I squirm during his non-horror films.

Yeah Paranomal Activity was pretty scary. I recommened it, good stuff.

The Shinning is really good. That hot tub scene always grosses me out. And the Creepy twins, haha. I need to buy that DVD.

Also American Werewolf in London is fuckin' badass. I love the transformation. And just overall it's a great movie. Another one of which I should buy.

Evil Dead is good too. Although not really scary anymore, but when I first saw it I jumped a couple of times.

John Carpenter's The Thing Is really good. House on Haunted Hill(Original w/V.Price), The Fly(w/Jeff Goldblum) when I first saw this one as a kid. I remember that my dad was watching it on the TV and I was eating Ramen Noodles right when his face start falling apart Puke after that we went to go see "Disney on Ice" Laughing

I don't know about you guys but I can't watch NOTLD anymore it bores me now, but I use to really like it. Tom Savini's remake was good.

Hey Norm, Isn't Jack Nicholson in The Terror? Or I'm I thinking of another movie? Confused

The Deadbeats

I remember the first Alien movie really freaking people out. I remember people in the theater really squirming. My favorite scary movie is The Shining.
The Trailer of Paranormal Activity looks pretty scary. The Forth Kind looks like it has some potential to creep people out.

As a kid on TV Twilight Zone: Nightmare At 20,000 Feet really spooked me.

I agree on The Thing ~ great movie!

Also second An American Werewolf in London as a really good movie, though the actual scary moments are few.

Agreed. For some reason, that movie tormented me when I was a kid.

When I was a kid, It: The Terror From Beyond scared the hell out of me. It was remade as Alien, which still makes me squirm even though I've seen it a million times.

From Wiki: "In writing the script O'Bannon drew inspiration from many previous works of science fiction and horror. He has stated that "I didn't steal Alien from anybody. I stole it from everybody."
But the synopsis of It: The Terror from Beyond Space is almost identical:
The film opens with a classic 1950s version of a spaceship perched on the cratered surface of an alien world. It transpires that this vessel has been sent to rescue the crew of a previous exploration mission. They have found only one survivor, Col. Edward Carruthers, and suspect him of having murdered the others. Carruthers pleads his innocence, blaming the deaths on an unknown creature they encountered on the planet.

The commander is unsympathetic and orders the ship to return to Earth. However, before blasting off, a junior crew-member unwisely leaves a door to the spaceship open for a time...

After lift-off, the crew settle down for the long trip back to Earth. It is not long before things start to go amiss: In (now) typical horror-movie fashion, unimportant crew-members wander off to isolated parts of the ship and are dispatched by It.

As the trip progresses, the crew are at first skeptical that something is aboard, but soon have to accept the fact as the body-count mounts. At this point they decide to tool-up - the ship is equipped with an impressive amount of weaponry, including handguns, machine-guns, hand-grenades and even a bazooka.

The intruder is largely immune to all this hardware however, and at one point the crew manage to trap It in the "reactor room" (the ship is nuclear-powered) and expose it to the reactor by raising a shutter (apparently the nuclear pile is like the furnace in a steam-ship).

As the crew dwindle, they retreat up the ship until finally they are in control only of the top-most chamber. In a final stand-off, in which all manner of anti-armour weapons are unleashed in a confined space to no great effect, they hit on the excellent idea of blowing the hatch. The explosive decompression does the rest and the creature is no more.

O'Bannon's script borrows many aspects from It the Terror from Beyond Space but it is certainly not a remake, or a direct lift either...

His script also borrows heavily from Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires. In addition, the basic plot is "10 Little Indians" which has been used in thousands of movies.

Alien is a milestone nevertheless. One of those moments in movie history when everything worked right... Ron Shussett and Dan O'Bannon's script, Ridley Scotts direction, Giger's creature design and amazing performances. One of the best horror/sci-fi, (if not all around movies) of all time!

Yes! American Werewolf!! This single film shaped what I do for a living, (creature FX), more than any other film. Another milestone. In the eighties, AWL, The Howling and The Thing rocked my world!

BTW, I love It the Terror from Beyond Space. And yes, Jack stars in The Terror with Boris Karloff. In fact, any movie with the word terror in it is cool with me, lol!

I believe its called the "Body Snatchers"
old black and white horror film with Boris Karloff as a Grave Robber,
gets fresh biddies for a doctor to show medical students how to do surgery.
then tries to tell him he's done, but he won't stop hounding him.
I'll stop there....

I just discovered that one fairly recently and have watched it a couple of times now. It's become a favorite. Not a scream-fest or anything, but definitely atmospheric and chilling. Karloff's performance was a revelation to me--I'd never seen him play a character in such depth and I discovered what a fully capable actor he was.

Got the DVR ready for the TCM Karloff marathon on the 30th . . .

Several times as a kid I thought I could hear IT in my closet breathing in the middle of the night. As a kid, that movie really freaked me out. Now its funny to watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLCJWHQRQgY

These also freaked me out when I was a kid.

Yes, I didn't mean to say it was an actual remake like The Day The Earth Stood Still, which I hear strays far from the original. The similarities are striking though: a stowaway alien, invinceable against modern weapons, going into the air ducts to find it, and finally opening the airlock to expel it. More similar to Alien than the official remake of The Thing (another influence on Alien) was to the original, or most remakes (Invasion) for that matter. I think only the beginning is similar to Planet of the Vampires, after that it is IT all the way. Good stuff to borrow from, even Shakespeare borrowed basic plots, the magic is in the telling.

...and my favorite alt-vampire movie: Near Dark. Vampires, Texas, Bill Paxton. Need I say more?
