Wow-you got some great suggestions. If you can find "The Kawabunga" surf box set, you'll have plenty to work on.
You should also go back to the roots. Rhino has CD's of 50's & 60's (non-surf) instrumentals to go along with the "Surf" compilation. Anything by Link Wray, Duane Eddy, The Ventures. Believe it or not, DD was inspired by Johnny Cash.
For new stuff, Los Straitjackets first 3 CD's have some great tunes. Definitely listen to Slacktone; but don't expect to be playing any of their stuff right away.
Join or start a band. It's a lot more fun to play than practice!

dude,
just go to youtube and type in dick dale or the ventures and then keep clicking on other related videos on the menu to the right after you've watched the main vid. you'll spend hours going from group to group of great stuff. you'll eventually end up listening to everything that everyone is telling you about on this thread.

i wish i had had that 25 years ago. the only way i could find stuff was by trying to buy the limited amount out there at the specialty vinyl shop or by finding it at yard sales or the salvation army.

you might not own it but it'll give you a better idea of what you like and what you should buy.

The three biggies of course are Dick Dale, The Surfaris, and The Chantays. They had the top selling hits of the era. But here are some personal and somewhat lesser known favorites that you should also check out. I'll stick with stuff that you can find easily on CD...

  1. The Belairs - Volcanic Action (SUNDAZED)
Paul Johnson is one the architects of Surf Music. I've been a fan for years but Jeff just gave me this "lost tapes" collection as a gift and it’s simply amazing!

  2. Eddie and the Showmen – Squad Car (EMI-CAPITOL)
Eddie was also in The Belairs and went on to form his own group with Dick Dodd on drums who would later form The Standells. This collection is a must have!

  3. The New Dimensions – Best of (SUNDAZED)
Teen age reverb driven fury at it’s finest!! This is real personal favorite. The oldest guy in this band was 16! There’s 2 live tracks on here as well that prove these guys could really rip it up.

  4. The Lively Ones – Hang Five (SUNDAZED)
Another big personal fave of mine with my favorite Surf Drummer Tim Fitzpatrick on drums. He just plays with so much confidence and intensity it’s insane. The lead and rhythm guitar interplay on this stuff just blows me away as well.

  5. Avengers VI – Real Cool Hits (DIONYSUS)
These guys got a late start as far as surf goes. They came on the scene post-British invasion! You’ve got to hand it to them for their tenacity. But their stuff is so killer that it makes you forget those pesky mop tops.

  6. Surf Creature Collection (ROMULAN)
This collection features over two dozen obscure bands that can rip it up with the best of them. Features Everybody Up by The Fender IV!! The intensity of this tune just boggles the mind.

Enjoy!

good suggestions! no need to pile on, however, give AOL radio a try, go to rock/surf rock.. tons of great tunes.. & free!
Also ,when buying CDs .. try to buy artist direct when possible. One more suggestion.. 3 words.. Pollo Del Mar! yumm.. thanks for the deeply moving music Ferenc & Co. .. I listen everyday..

I highly recommend this compilation. The Looney Tunes version of A Go-Go Dancer blows me away big time!

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

There's already a ton of great suggestions--I'd like to add Surfer's Mood comps

you need to learn Pipeline by The Chantays. You will find the original on iTunes or visit them on Facebook or the web.

Enjoy the surf!

Surf in with the astronauts is really the great one. I also like that as you get many options you can really start with some of them, as you are new for surf style playing you should start with basic.

The harder you fall, the higher you bounce.

The Insect Surfers are really great. Try out the Ghastly Ones or Los Strait Jackets.

I especially recommend Slacktone.

Hi everyone, newb here to the forum, and to electric guitar in general. I didn't see a new member thread so I thought I might just jump in here.

Long story short, I'm a willing learner with a rather peculiar new guitar for a beginner, so I thought I might see what I could play. I'm old enough to know what surf sounds like, but I've never considered it from an equipment angle. The guitar is a Schecter Blackjack EX baritone. I've read it can play some surf, some metal, some blues.

I joined tonight, I've had a chance to listen to some Dale and Chantays, and I've looked at some tabs.

Any further advice is most welcome.

Be honest, are you a spammer? Why would your first posts on a surf forum be for a rockabilly band?

LOOK OUT FOR DOCTEUR LEGUME!

I agree with what a few of you pointed out above. The Rhino Instrumental vol.5: Sur_f cd is the best Smörgåsbord in a single disc. The _Kowabunga 4 disc box set from Rhino is a little harder to get, but a bigger scoop and equally a great place to start. Listening to groups' CDs is fine too, but for an overall dose to get rolling fast with these you can't go wrong. Enjoy!

...and if you're looking to see how some of these bands fit into the context of music you may already know, an interesting jump-off point is:

...which shows the linkages between bands and their musicians... and their various histories.

...and yes, I'm still always on the look-out for any new way I can use (a sub-class of) mind maps Smile

Just re-reading this thread. Hadn't noticed that audiomap tool before. That's pretty awesome!!

Sorry I didn't read all the other posts, I hate to repeat anything...

I'll always plug Los Straitjackets and Laika & the Cosmonauts, as far as favorites, regardless of era, but they're bothodern bands. I've discovered a ton of good bands through Amazon.com recommendations and Pandora, as well as Los Straitjackets' website.

Shameless self-promotion- check out Molly Maguires' album Dirty Surf on iTunes! Help out the little guy!

Am not sure if maybe someone has already mentioned that, but be sure not to forget to check and play MOVIN'.

Knock yourself out with tons of reverb !!
