Like all Slayer solos, it's just random notes in an unrepeatable fashion. Smile

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Brian
Well, with all due respect, the dude was asking how to play Mr. Moto. I assume he was asking about the original, seminal recording. Not the way some random modern surf band plays it, or the way Paul Johnson plays it now. Those may be interesting side discussions, but they don't answer his question.

Otherwise I'll post the tab to Slayer's "Raining Blood" because that sounds good too. ROTFL

Spud's post of Paul's reply should have been the final word and should have ended this thread. If that didn't answer the question satisfactorily nothing will.

"Use whammy bar to emulate horse whinny in key of D#. Step on cat to sound in G. Punch fretboard while kicking wah pedal ..."

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Tab out the solo. I dare ya. Very Happy

I would bet Kerry King couldn't even tab out that solo, or reproduce it note for note.

First off here's where I'm coming from. In order to learn Mr. Moto I decided to make my own tab. I used "Guitar Pro 5" because it does musicial notation so I could work out the timing of the notes. I made my first tab a while ago and had it posted in the tabs section of this website. When I discovered this topic and especially the info regarding the intro I figured I better update my tab and resubmit it. I used all the info in this topic regarding the intro, the bridge and the extro and put them all in version 2.0 of my Mr. Moto tab. There's enough bars and notes so I can play along with the original recording, I can't say that for other tabs I seen. I tried not to be creative so some bars just have a beat. The piano part is just the guitar part transposed. It's Mr. Moto 101.
Here's the PDF file of version 2, http://home.cogeco.ca/~recroomsurfer/mr-moto-v2-1.pdf
I played it back with Guitar Pro and made this MP3, http://home.cogeco.ca/~recroomsurfer/mr-moto-v2-1.mp3
If you have Guitar Pro 5 here's the gp5 file, http://home.cogeco.ca/~recroomsurfer/mr-moto-v2-1.gp5
It's intended as a learning tool not a document of the song. If you find anything please let me know and I'll fix it before I submit it to the tabs download section. Thanks for all the great info in this topic.
edit: version 2.1

Hey dp-love you're picture of Master Po-my favorite Kung Fu character. As Master Khan would say; "When you can play the 'Bells' on 'The Bells of St. Kahuna', it will be time for you to leave".

Ah, so, Grasshopper!

can this thread be considered for inclusion in the "best of" area?

Hell yes, good idea.

thanks Brian: this thread really shows how cool SG101 can be...it still blows my mind that Paul took the time to respond Wink

I've been trying to learn Mr. Moto and the one vid and various tabs provide a variety of ways. But a Google search brought up this thread and I was able to find the most accurate way to play the intro from the person who created it, thanks. As this is the go-to place for surf music I will be spending more time here because of my renewed interest in it.

Sin,
It's just a 1st position B flat Major barre with an open top E string, followed by an A Major barre with suspended 4th on the 2nd string, then a D minor (actually just 'power chord' 5th) with flat 6th suspension on the 3rd string. ALL 1ST POSITION.
Paul and Eddie were like 14 years old when they wrote it, so you gotto believe it's totally basic.

Squink Out!

SinNombre, glad you found and reminded us of this thread.

For everyone who keeps posting instructions on how to play the opening: we have the info straight from Paul Johnson himself already in this thread.
